Download Manager of SDC: Not sure it is working right

Was 30MB into download and home alarm system cut the line (I'm on 56k6). Set SDC to download and archive again, and it seems to have started from scratch again.

SDC version is 0.99b.141

Any suggestion about how to get it to resume in the future?

I'm off to bed now, so won't be picking up answers for about 8 hours.

Later all.

Think I've partially figured out the answer. Answer being, check download log, delete last file that was downloading, let it all go again.

Reason I think this is I got up at 3am NZT to check download progress and it said 'file foo is incorrect size, check log?' BTW, when this happened it didn't continue with any other files or attempt to redownload that particular file.

Oh well. *sigh* The things we go through for a decent game :)

At least I figure the solution I thought of might work... because instead, with 3am thinking I deleted the backup contents (I'm archiving then installing) and started again.

Now I'm off to work with 42.29 MB downloaded... GalCiv, here I come! :)

Oh **$%^*&. 80% of the way through. Program stopped downloading with a 'file foo is not the right size.' Started from scratch again, and me on a 56k6 in New Zealand.

What do you do to get SDC to continue downloads?????

HELP!!!

hey Togakure I am in NZ too, also with a 56k; don't worry, I have been trying for more than 24 hours now to download the main game file (84.5mbs)

funnily enough, I too have been having home alarm problems today which obviously doesn't help matters

anyway I'm still trying

The resume functionality of SDC leaves a lot to be desired. It seems to have been designed with cable users in mind, since it won't even save where you're up to within a file to resume later, it will only (sometimes) save the files you've completed. :notsure:

I'm just going to keep at it for the moment and hope for the best. Failing that, I'll order the cd. LOL

You defintely need to use Stardock Central RC1. That's why you're having these problems. Go to the downloads section, choose Stardock Central and isntall that. It will clear your temp directory but once you do that, the resume and all that works very well.

Thank you Brad. I've got RC1 now (I hope. It is showing up as "0.99c.145, build: 2"). And it did autoupdate, so I'm filled with more hope now... not that I'd give up trying to get hold of the game LOL

Hopefully I can get in 10 minutes playing late tonight sometime before I need to go to bed (:(

You and me both! There are rumors that I have 2 small children but I haven't seen them in a long time. ;)

Brad, I beg to differ. I installed RC1 some hours ago, it did not clean out my temp directory, I still have some 241mb there currently (I am on a 56k modem so have not downloaded it all since RC1 installation)

I apparently have downloaded 106/84.50 mb, or 125%(!). Someone suggested in another thread that this was a display mistake, but certainly my temp file has not been emptied

Resume is not currentlly supported in the Download and Archive option.

Resume should work for when you click the "Intall" button to do a download and install.

I have RC1 as well and it's still not working properly for me either.
It's stuck at downloading Weapons.md_ yet again. I assume it's one of the larger files and the lame 2 retry restriction means I don't have much chance of getting the whole file before running out of retries. :notsure:

Mythor - that is actually a matter of weapons.mdl being such a large file that because we're kind of saturated right now, it's timing out. Just keep resuming and it should pick it up.

Didn't you mention yesterday you're in Australia or something?

Yep, I'm an aussie. I actually got it finished last night, then it had problems with another file after it tried to install it, then with the rc1 install it all got wiped and now I'm back to Weapons.mdl again. (:(

Isn't there some way for me to increase the number of retries? :notsure:

Mythor - you read my mind. Yes, as soon as I saw your first post I submitted a request to increase the retries.

Sorry about all the pain you're experiencing. There is a reason why no one has ever tried to do what we're doing before. ;)

Did you get the email with the CD ROM option? Should only take 4 or 5 days once we have the CDs to get them over there. Then at least once you have that, you'll never have to do a full install again.

I am using broadband and i have installed stardockcentralrc1. Half way through the dowload it gave and error message. The same happened with mulimedia download. However the resume function is working properly so i am back to dowloading and it looks like its working fine now. :) But is this SC version the one i should be using or there is a better one?

Sorry Brad, hadn't been checking my email because of that dang Weapons.md_ file. It finished! (again!)

I don't have an email about the CD yet, unless you meant the email address to write to? Will go drop that one an email now. :)

It's a hassle, I know I'm complaining a bit, but it's very frustrating being so close to the game and yet not being able to play. ;)

and that just takes the cake; typed out a long message, and guess what, it didn't work

what a surprise

I have tried for 29 hours now to get a 84 mb file(which I still don;t have); I have sat here probably 8-10 hours nursemaiding this process because you can't leave it for long because of the problems

I haven't received the email about the CD; it was promised last week, then 2 days ago, then some hours ago - still nothing

"Were you doing a 'download and install' or a 'download and archive' action? "

Is this question addressed to me? If it is then i have no idea what you mean by it... :notsure:

When starting the download in SDC, did you just hit the 'install' button, or did you right-click on the program and choose 'archive' from the list?

Apologies if this is still not clear, TLA-Russian.

Just got dissconected. But how do i resume? There is no resume button.

I assume its either click the install button again, or right click and choose 'download & archive. I chose the latter and the download went back to 0% VERY annoying!

Can anyone clarify exactly (i'm a bit slow so please be VERY specific :) ) how i should go about resuming a download. I have the RC1 version of Stardock. As i am not on broadband and have a 2 hour cutoff i can't finish the download without some help here.

I really want to get htis game and this is sooooo frustrating.
