FAQ: STATUS REPORT (3/25)

Here's where we stand:

On Tuesday afternoon we put up a new build of Stardock Central that gave all beta testers access to GalCiv.

The idea was to find out what problems we might run into. And boy, did we find a huge problem. The installer on some systems deleted files in c:\! Talk about a potential disaster.

We have since corrected the problem but in the immediate time we're going to direct our tech support resources to make sure the people who ran into this can recover. We will create a recovery thread shortly that will have a mini program that will help recover your system.

IF you installed SDCentral .99, check your c:\ drive and make sure files you need are there. Don't reboot if they're not, wait for the mini fix to be made available unless you have some other way to recover them (so far most people we've talked to have found ways to resolve it themselves).

We also got the second high bandwidth server up. The beta testers reported downloads speeds ranging from 50K per second to 200K per second depending on location. So that's good.

We will keep you up to to date on how things are going.

Tomorrow relatively early in the day EST we will be opening it up again with a new SDCentral installer.

If you somehow manage to get ahold of SDCEntral .99, do not install it. Wait for us to post an official new build. While the problem isn't anywhere near 100% (thankfully) don't take any chances.

I'm an Aussie, so it's only ten to seven (pm) over here.

Not that I'm normal. ;)

A quick note from previous post (first reply to this thread): No problems booting up after the auto update yesterday. Its nice to see the way things are working around here. :)

ACTUALLY....

The Pools of Radiance problem was multifold, but worked as follows:

1) You had insufficient space for installing the game on the C: drive, since the game wouldn't let you install it anywhere else.
2) When the installed failed due to insufficient space, you then tried to use the uninstaller, which then got confused and started erasing stuff it shouldn't.

This BY NO MEANS happened to everyone. In fact, based on several polls (given, online so suspect), it happened to less than 1% of the owners of the game. Computer professionals (or knowledgeable amateurs) used this as a case for some very important lessons:

1) While it's nice to limit C: to your operating system, it's always good to have plenty of space there. An OS-only partition of less than 4G is insane.
2) When an installer fails, NEVER use the uninstaller to remove the game. If you can't figure out how to do it manually, call tech support and get help.

Sorry for the lecture, but it drives me nuts when people say everyone had some problem when in fact, the majority didn't.

Uh, maybe it happened to a lot more people, but their systems were too screwed up to go online and complain. :)

For the record, it had nothing to do with WISE. Variable in the SDC not being initialized in time.

We're on irc.stardock.com, #galciv.

Yeah, it was pulled as soon as the problem was discovered. Latest is 0.99b - http://storage.stardock.com/files/stardockcentral099b.exe
