Knitting Socks Is Magic

I spent a fair amount of time knitting on my first sock today and really made some progress on it. I was a bit concerned about turning the heel. Even after reading the instructions several times I just couldn't understand how it was going to create a 90 degree turn in the sock to make the heel.

But I followed the instructions to the letter and like magic there was a 90 degree bend and an actual heel in the sock. Amazing. Having done it now I understand how it works, kind of, but it really is like magic. You're basically working with some sticks and some string and magically this lump of string turns into a recognizable object.

After picking up and shaping the gusset, I'm now on the long boring part. It's basically just knitting around and around until the foot of the sock is long enough to fit. In my case, as I have size 13 feet, that's a lot of going around in circles. Once I finally have the foot of the sock long enough I'll tackle the final part; the toe.

I have a rather stupid question about knitting socks...are you using thicker yarn, or thinner yarn for this project? I would think that thicker yarn wouldn't be comfortable in a shoe...? But thinner yarn would take forever to knit with and it sounds like you're making headway pretty darn quick...

As this is my first attempt at socks, and thicker yarn (worsted weight) is easier to work with as you use larger needles, that's what I am doing this time around.

I like heavier socks for winter, and these are coming out pretty much like the heavy socks I normally wear in cold climates. Most people knit "house socks" from worsted weight but I plan to actually wear them inside my boots in the colder climates. I wear slightly wider sized boots in the winter to accommodate thicker socks.

I have some sport weight cotton yarn I plan to use to knit summer socks with.

Yeah, I'll post a pic once I finish the first sock. I'm hoping to have it finished some time tomorrow.

That much I do understand (the turning), even if I cannot do it.  I have read how it is done, and since I cant do it, it is still magic to me as well.

It is pretty interesting to see it happen.

Thanks. I've always been a bad influence. You'll find it a lot of fun.

Only 3 more inches to go before I can start the toe!
