EZ Run: 9mi @ 8:52 (Planned: Rest) | ||||
| Weight: 187 | Time: 10:00am | Temp: 32f | Weather: Light Snow | Route: Howell to Pinckney |
| Notes: This run was the beginning of my weekend emotional rollercoaster. Unfortunately this was entirely down hill. From the weather forecast it looked like this weekend was going to be pretty much un-runable. Except for a brief window between 9am and 2pm on Saturday. Were it would be above freezing, and not snowing. So I decided to do my Long run a day early. This did not work out so well. Even though it was not much below freezing there was still light snow the entire run. Thanks to the last week of constant snow the shoulder of the road, that I was running on, was either covered with snow, or well salted mud. This forced me to run on the asphalt as much as possible, so I was constantly dogging of the shoulder and to avoid cars, and losing traction in the mud. This alone might explain slow decent into the emotional doldrums. I started off pretty well, I was ahead of pace for the first 2 miles Than I hit the first hill, and went from 500ft ahead to 200, I never got more then 300 ahead again, and every hill after that felt like a mountain. Near the end of Mile 7 I hit the largest hill on my route, and by the time I crested the top I was barely ahead at all. Somehow the down side of the hill was not any the relief that I had hoped for. As i began mile 8, I was suddenly overwhelmed by a desire to rest, and I slowed to drink some Gatorade, and all my will fled me, all of the sudden I could not bear the idea of finishing the run. Before I could buck up and start running again I had called my wife and asked her to meat me in Pinckney. I walked on for a bit, then began to run the last mile, by the time I made it to were I had arranged to be picked up I was regretting my decision. I know that I could have finished, physically, this wall was entirely mental. The entire ride home I was in a huge funk, All I could think about is that this was my first real failure of this training program, and that I was doomed, I had lost all my drive. When I got home it was barely able to get up to the shower. Then the strangest thing happened, I got my second wind. | ||||
