Oh Man! I Just HAVE To Knit One Of These!

Someone just sent me a link to the pattern for this scarf.

Now I have even more reason to improve my knitting skills. I have to make this one for sure!

It's an illusion scarf, Mason, and it's very easy to knit.  It looks like a regular scarf but when you turn it to a different angle you'll be able to see the pattern.

You can knit and you can purl, and that's all you need.  It's just a mix of those two.  No yarn overs, no ssk's no decreases and no increases.  Easy.

I'll make it for you if you like......

I appreciate the offer, but I'm really wanting to do this one myself. I've just been doing some reading on illusion knitting and it does actually look pretty simple. It looks like the hardest part will simply be keeping track of where you are in the pattern as you go.

I was all concerned about having to carry the colors and all that as I haven't tried to tackle knitting with multiple colors, but with illusion knitting that doesn't look like any problem. It's not as complicated as Fair Isle knitting and one can simply carry the odd color up the side for two rows. Seems simple enough.

I think I know what my next project is going to be.

Ooh! Ooh! I want one!

BTW Mason, thanks for the advice a while back on Linux. I'm playing around with SimplyMEPIS now, and I'm going to get a computer next week to be my Linux-only compy.

Fun stuffs.

You're quite welcome. Once you get some Linux experience under your belt and are feeling pretty comfortable with the command line, give Slackware a shot. There's a reason why it's the oldest distro still in use. If you're of the do-it-yourself ilk, you'll love it. Far faster than Mepis or most other distros, and rock solid stable.

Great, a half hour gone on google whacking photos, and another new area of knitting for me to obsess on. Thanks a lot!

Ya gotta admit, the illusion knitting is pretty damn cool.

Mason: you can get row counters.  I have one that I simply click and it keeps track of the rows (up to 100, then you have to reset it) or there are ones that fit on your needles and you have to turn them manually.

You're right about the yarn being carried at the end of the rows.  All you have to do it make a little twist to keep the yarn from sagging.

San Chon: If Mason will share the pattern with me, I'd be more than happy (I'd LOVE to, in fact) to make you one.  Let me know if you'd like one and what colors you'd like.

SPC: You, Sir, are officially a Knitter.  Not a knitter, but a Knitter.  Welcome to the club, old chap!

This is in the winter edition of Knitty.com :

It's knitted in a tube and the numbers are done in Fair Isle. Just for the reconrd, Fair Isle knitting scares me almost as much as steeking does, but I'd be prepared to try and overcome my fear to make this for someone.

(for those who are not familiar with knitting terms, steeking is when you cut holes in your knitting to place a sleeve or make an edge where there wasn't one before. For example, say I was knitting a cardigan. Instead of knitting 2 fronts and one back, I'd knit one big tube and 2 sleeves and steek the tube to create arm holes and a divided front. It's scary stuff......)

I got a counter that fits on the needle in the starter kit I bought. Now I know what it's for
Fair Isle scares me

Dharma, if you want the pattern for the Linux scarf, it's at this link:

Linux Scarf

That one from Knitty is pretty cool too.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm too stupid to work with yarn in any way.

I'll have to stick with my embroidery.

So am I, but that doesn't stop me.

Dharma: I would cry like a little girl if you actually knitted that for me.

If I were to pick colors, I'd say that a nice navy and grey, not unlike the picture, would be the colors for me.

Dharma: I would cry like a little girl .

Now don't do that - I do not think that will make a pretty site!

I have the pattern and I'll find the yarn from my huge stash (so huge that my husband, upon seeing the tub in the closet for the first time said "excuse me, but is that really all yarn in there? You could start your own damn store!!!") tomorrow and cast it on. It's a pretty big scarf and whilst I will try my best to get it finished in time for you to wear it at least once this season, you may have to store it over the summer. I'll do my best, though.

There's no crying in knitting. Remember that.

Btw, you have mail.

Dharma - do you do all your knitting by hand or do you sometimes use a machine?

Dharma - if you are into taking orders for those things, and the cost isn't excessive, I'd love to buy one of these from you.  Completely understandable if you don't have the time, don't want to make it a commercial exercise, etc.,  but it is a very slick looking item and one I'd love to have here too (and I don't mind paying for the handiwork if it's not terribly expensive).

Karen: You're the best! And I'd probably sport it during the summer anyway, just to show it off.

Thanks for the mail. I shoot you off a note ASAP.

Well, I dont guess anyone is going to bet against you.  If so, I will cover them!

Looks great and have fun!  Want a Tamale?

Ooh, hush your mouth, woman!!!!! A knitting MACHINE???!!! That's blasphemy!

No, I do it all by hand.

It's not excessive (it's a lot less than $50; I dunno if you think that's excessive or not), and yes, I'd be happy to make one for you. I'll let you know when once I see how fast this one's knitting up.

Awww, aren't you sweet?! I'll go look for that mail now....
