Races, customization and disappearing stuff

I'm a bit new to the game. Got most of the basics down, but one thing still puzzles me: the race customization.

Assuming I'm going with one of the default races (not a custom one), am i supposed to use the leftover points in the customization screen? At first I assumed they are supposed to "flesh out" your race and let the player adjust them to his/her own style, but I ran into some problems...

For instance, whenever I try to add something to the Yor, they lose their innate +100% Loyalty. Any touching of the reset button messes everything up, and to make matters worse, most of these changes seem ireversable.

The original 10 points are often insufficient to "recreate" a race, and some bonuses can't be duplicated anyway (the +100% loyalty for Yor).

So, my questions are:

1. Am I supposed to mess with the default races or are they "complete"? Basically, am I supposed to have leftover points on them to spend or should I just move along and ignore the customize race screen (except for the cosmetics)?

2. Is there any way to reset them to the default stats (barring a reinstall)?

3. Anything else I should know about the pick/customize civ screens?

Ok, I stumbled upon the GalCiv2 wiki and answered a few of my questions (inherent bonuses, leftover points and how I managed to lose the inherent bonuses). My only question now is: Can I restore the default civilizations without reinstalling the game? Is there a button to press? A file to delete? A kitten to sacrifice?

Managed to undo the changes (deleting the files in the GalCiv2 folder in Docs&Settings), but I'm back to square 1:

Whenever I try using the leftover points for customization I end up losing a random default ability. For instance, as I mentioned in my original post, using ANY points as the Yor, whatever I pick replaces the +100 Loyalty.

Is this supposed to happen? Is this a bug? If not, I could use an explanation as to how the damn thing works...

A 'free' default ability (any one that cannot be chosen as an option in customization) should only be lost if you choose that same ability in a different amount (the two cannot stack). I play Yor most of the time myself, and regardless what customizations I make the Loyalty bonus sticks fine as long as you don't try to pick an extra Loyalty bonus.

Yeah, I assumed as much from what I read, so i tried to pick a totally unrelated bonus. It still replaced one of the default ones. Not just the Yor. For instance, the humans lose the diplomacy bonus even when I try taking something that they didn't have before (creativity or some such).

Currently, I'm stuck not spending those last 3 customization points at all...

It certainly shouldn't be doing that. Do you have the latest patch (1.4x)?

Nope, running a 56k modem which makes 40 MB patches a bit hard to manage *embarrased*

What I used to do on dailup is use a free download manager and just let it d/l overnight.I downloaded a 360MB file on dailup that way. Took 28 hours, but it got there.   The patches have significant gameplay tweaks and bug fixes, it's worth the effort to get updated.

In that case, I strongly suggest downloading it at a library or friend's house and transferring it home via USB drive or CD-R, if you can't succesfully download it overnight at home as DethAdder suggests. There have been a great number of bug fixes, improvements, and additions to the game since release.
