Pink Makes Me See Red

A mini-rant...

Pink, the singer born Alecia Moore, has joined in with PETA to call for bans of Australian wool because of the inhumane way sheep are treated. This is despite legislation having been introduced to ban the practise of ‘mulesing’ by the Australian government in the next few years. What it amounts to is yet another kick in the teeth to the Australian farmer, who is already suffering because of the worst drought this country has ever seen.

Good on you, Pink. You can sit in your fancy home, racking in squillions of dollars for being a prime, a-grade bitch and capitalising on music you didn’t even compose. But what gives you the right to stick your ugly mug into the economic affairs of another country? What gives you the right to dictate anything to already cash-strapped farmers? What gives you the right to become embroiled in matters you have little or no knowledge of and even then, it is totally subjective. I bet you haven’t spent an hour on a sheep farm, let alone have any understanding of why mulesing occurs or how the industry operates.

I’ll tell you what right you have; absolutely fucking none. And neither do those far-left dwelling morons in P.E.T.A. Thanks to you and your sycophantic cronies, you are sticking yet another pin into the Aussie farmers. How about I run a campaign to stop your music being played because of the unbearable cruelty it causes anyone over the age of 15. Maybe then you will remember to mind your own fucking business.

It just goes to show how sad things have become when the weight of a fucking pop singer's opinion can become world news, with even our head politicians wading into the debate. Sure, Costello said the right thing, for once, when he said he didn't think Australian farmers would be taking her advice too soon.

Celebrities need to be fucking reminded they're only where they are because of us, the listener, watcher and consumer. And if you piss us off enough, you will be forgotten very quickly.

I doubt she's done any of her own research. She is probably just parrotting what PETA wants her to say. I don't want to see any animals treated inhumanely but I think PETA goes way to far. I also have much more concern for the people suffering in the world than I do for the animals.

But remember, this is the same person who lectured George Bush (in song) about "hard work", lamenting, among other things "minimum wage with a baby on the way". Yup. The singer whose ticket prices command more than a day's wages for those minimum wage workers complains about the President not having a clue.

It's all about saying what it takes to sell records. She's completely clueless.

I disagree with some of the statements that you've made, and agree with other comments.

I believe that anyone, can and should stand up for their beliefs whether they are a celebrity or not. The benefits of celebrity-dom is the opportunity to reach a wider audience, even if it is not in their so-called field of employment. However, with these benefits should come greater responsibility to understand all implications of public speaking for a cause.

What I object to is Pink's call to ban Australian wool, without her even attempting to offer alternatives within the industry, or, as mentioned, refering to the already introduced legislation to ban said practice. Yet, I also object the practices of so-called journalists who repeatedly produce 'articles' that are unresearched, taken out of context, and tend to go along with 'an insider said', or 'a close friend mentioned'. Many times, a celebrity is left looking the idiot, when often, a quote gets repeated endlessly, out of context, and taken as truth.

Again, 'responsibility' is the key to my response, both of the person who is taking advantage of a built-in audience to spread their researched and informed opinion, and that of the writer, who has a responsibility to not just present sound clips for shock value or controversy. Good article.

Pink? I think she's just a has-been trying to get some attention. I'm a bit disappointed to hear of this, I thought she had sense. I liked the song "Stupid Girl" which was about how girls demean themselves and why they should be more ambitious and smart. Guess she's become a 'stupid girl' herself with this one.

Outstanding! You do not get enraged often, but when you do, it is a joy to read!

O, BTW, I agree completely with you.

Bingo. I don't mind somebody taking a position, but don't pretend that you know what it's like to struggle along at minimum wage when you make more than a year's wages for a minimum wage worker with each public appearance. It's insulting, really.

Funny how people on the outside of a situation are always experts, isn't it?

Good article, Maso

(wow, and remind me never to piss you off!   )

Loca,

Neither do I. It is just so typical of these sorts of organisations to go off half-cocked and make things hardest for those who least deserve it, in this case, the poor bloody farmers. Like you I would far rather see people throwing money at ending poverty or providing clean water for the millions who don't have it.

Gideon,

She's completely clueless

And she is being fed bullshit from P.E.T.A., which she is happy to spout to anyone who'll listen. If she doesn't KNOW what she is talking about she should just shut the hell up.

Nicky

I guess this is what I was trying to get at. Spreading mis-information under the guise of 'doing good' is ignorance at its worst. I have no problem with people standing up for what they believe, but they had better make sure their facts are right, particularly if they're going public with them. As you say, responsibility is the key element missing here, I think.

Good article

Thanks

Raven,

Guess she's become a 'stupid girl' herself with this one.

Not so much stupid as gullible and misinformed. I learnt a long time ago to 'check my facts before opening my yap'. It is a pity she didn't take this advice. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed in her myself. I'm not a fan, not in the slightest, but I admire anyone who is feisty and doesn't conform to the 'norm'. Now I'm not so sure about her.

Doc,

it is a joy to read

Thanks, Doc. I don't often get like this myself, at least not on paper I just feel for the poor farmers who are suffering enough without this sort of crap.

Gideon,

It's insulting, really

On so many levels...

Shovel,

remind me never to piss you off

Thanks mate. I don't lose it much at all, but when I read this, I just couldn't let it go.
