A company based in New York will pay $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Washington's Attorney General.  The company was accused of marketing software that claimed PC's were infected with spyware, then enticing consumers to pay for their program to "clean" it.

Microsoft also sued the company after their advertising implied their tools came from or were endorsed by Microsoft.  The status of that case is unknown at that time.

Over 1,000 Washington residents who purchased the software will be eligible for a refund.  The company is required to e-mail all customers in Washington who purchased the software to let them know of the refund.

And there needs to be more of it.....given these 'products' more often than not infect rather than clean, it's high time these net parasites were taken to task by the courts and made to pay for each and every violation they've ever made....to reimburse every cent in triplicate to all those they've duped....to pay extremely huge fines that'd bankrupt 'em into business non-existence, on the net and/or otherwise.

Hang 'em all...

I had a system in our shop the other day, infected with DriveCleaner crapware, and when I shut down the systray applet, it pops-up a window telling me "...your system has 4936 serious security flaws!". What a crock. I despise the brain-donors who write this stuff.
