Allies

I'm playing a huge map, down to 5 opponents, difficulty tough, victory conditions conquest only, and all of the opponents are allied together. What's that about? To combat this, I allied with 2 of them as well. This is the only way I could attack somebody without having everybody turn against me at once. How often does this explosive ally thing happen? Honestly, how could the AI make the tactical decision to ally himself with every single opponent?

Are you much larger than any single AI? I had a similar thing happen where I was the dominant power (about 40% of the galaxy, Arceans had 15% and were in 2nd place). The Iconians, Altarians, Thalans and Drath all allied in a perfect 4 way alliance and together controlled the remaining 35% of the galaxy. I think they can tell if you are aggersive enough to blast them or not and will take this mesure to protect themselves

Awhile back I was in a game, did my usual gradual build up ignoring the AI for the most part. When I decided it was time to remove a neighbor I forgot to check the treaties screen. Low and behold I attack and four civs respond by declaring war on me. I checked, they were all allied. I eventually won it, but I never go to war without checking alliances now.

Sounds like a good war.
