Demanding research tribute from a planet?

There is an independant planet (the scottlindas) near one of my planets. I have spoken to them and demanded tribute (in this case, Laster III) and the guy says he has given it to me. But then when I check my research tree, it is still unlearned and able to research. Am I doing something wrong? Why am I not receiving the researched item?
