Requirements

I know this has been discussed before but I'd like to hear it from Brad. I have a P2 333 - 256MG Ram - will it be enough to run GalCiv without too much trouble or do I have to upgrade my computer ?

Thanks

G.

Minimun is PIII 600, but you should be able to run the smaller galaxies I think, but I recommend that you upgrade.. (My personal opinion) ;)

600 Mhz. for a turn-based strategy? Holey Moley, what's it need all that for? Seems like that could be pared back a bit don't you think?

As I said, I think 600 is the minimum for the larger maps.. like gigantic with over 2000 planets (or so ive heard).
Read the post on galaxy size ;)
As I said, you should be able to play the smaller ones..

I've got a 450mhz K6+ w/ 160 RAM (old laptop so I have a monitor plugged in) and I had no problem playing up to the medium galaxy size w/ the last beta. I didn't get to be in the gamma, but Brad said they did some more optimization with the sizes so this type of setup may work fine on some of the larger ones....

Brad has mentioned many times before that he runs smaller galaxies on his notebook, (I think he said it is a 400Mhz). As to why it needs the processing power? The AIs are super smart. It takes cycles to get any real intellegence out of an AI.

I have played the Beta on a PII 350, dual cpus mind you, 256MB RAM and was quite happy with maps up to Medium in size.

For a report from the bottom-of-the-line, I'm running GalCiv on a Pentium MMX 200MHz with 86MB RAM and I rarely see slowdowns other than loading of one of the one-time animations, like the 'first' binks or the tech animations.

Performance, of course, will be better on higher-end systems under extreme circumstances. I expect that if I got a game going that ended up in a huge war in a deadlock, there'd be some slowdown updating 2000+ ships and several hundred colonies, at least on my system, and if I want to listen to other music without changing GalCiv's normal BGM, I'd better use a CD-player instead of WinAMP3.

Well, that sounds encouraging. I had written off the game when I saw the MINUMUM requirements were so high. I've played some games, who's minimum requirements I met, and was not pleased. Sounds like they may be over-stating them a bit. You don't expect to be able to use every option in a game unless you meet the recommended requirements. I hope it doesn't turn too many others away as it did me. I'm still hesitant...I'll see what everyone says after the release.

Honestly, I can't say I know of a game that doesn't overstate it's requirements. Nearly 3/4ths of the games I have here I supposedly can't play.
