WindowBlinds 'Blackcomb' causing restart instead of shutdown?

I have to disable Windowblinds to shut down, and it will not reboot.

Recently, I have had to replace my harddrive. After setting windows up on my new hd, I reinstalled Windowblinds. It appeared to be working fine. (I now have all my normal programs and drivers installed and updated on this computer.) Until I attempted to shut down the computer.

I am using the trial of Windowblinds for the time being, and I am using the default 'BlackComb' skin. On my previous computer, I had Windowblinds 4, and Blackcomb worked fine. Now, however, when I try to shutdown, it immediately restarts the computer. Last night I had to disable Windowblinds from the system tray and reset my skin. At that time I was able to shut-down normally.

The next day, when I attempted to reboot, windows froze while loading int he "XP loading" screen. I had to hard-boot my computer, and select the "Restart with last known settings that worked." option from the option in the DOS menu. This allowed me to restart my computer, and when I rebooted my skin was once again Blackcomb.

I am afraid to attempt to shut down my computer now, because I have work that needs to be done today and I can't afford to have windows break (Again). Why is Windowblinds forcing a restart instead of a shutdown with the Blackcomb skin, and why did Windows freeze while loading?

open WB configuration, click system info on the left and copy/paste all the info

do you also use Bootskin?

This is a computer I built from scratch about a year ago from newegg parts. No problems with it til recently. I do not know what bootskin is so no, I do not. The only things I have running on this computer are games, Windowblinds, Avast Antivirus, uGuru (my chipset monitor), and my misc. drivers for graphics/sound/input. This is a fresh installation of windows XP professional edition (one day old, and yes it is fully updated.)

Thanks for looking! If you have any suggestions it'd be a big help. =/ I just re-set this computer up from a crash issue with Windows freezing while starting up that resulted in the destruction of my harddrive. I really do not want to repeat the issue, and would really just like to have windows function normally for once. :/

latest update I find for Blackcomb is 2003 "with full support of WB 4.0" - I'm running it now to see (WB 5.1 pd ver)

Alright, thanks. I havn't tried loading a different skin and restarting yet, again, because I am afraid that whatever crash issue will re-occur before I can finish my work and backup my system.

Went straight to 'turn off' - 'shut down' = no problems

. I havn't tried loading a different skin and restarting yet, again,

Once you finish and back up, try different skins - with out trying other skins, you can't really nail it down to Blackcomb.

It's not the skin, I have the same problem will all skins, must be something else besides WB. Yes, I have bootskin running, also Objectdock, all free editions, WB is 4.6... This started on my machine some time ago, just happened one day, just about the time I installed IP 3.0....Still don't know what causes the problem, only way I can shut down is to hibernate...A minor irritation, I won't change anything, all Stardock products I use are super, and it's worth the minor problem!!!

are you running x64?

if you are, try unchecking 'show icon in system tray' in 'user overrides'

1.) No, I am running normal Windows XP PRO, not 64 bit.

2.) I have deciphered the problem. There is a system conflict between Windowblinds and the game 'Dark Messiah of Might and Magic'. After playing that game you must unload windowblinds in order to shut down, or you must unload Windowblinds before playing.

3.) The reboot issue is actually a symptom of another problem with my computer. Because it is persisting even though I have replaced the harddrive this leads me to believe its hardware.
At the moment, I think that my Power supply may be dying, which is why, when I shut down, the computer freezes on loading windows. When I reboot, the power supply can warm up and then windows succeeds in loading. This also explains why restarting wouldnt' cause a problem.

interesting.

I saw a Dark Messiah post just the other day, but it had to do with an OEM version of WB shipped with Alienware.

glad you at least got it puzzled out.
