Vista RC2 Coming This Friday

Only 1400 bugs to go....

http://neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=35335

Think that RC1 wasn't even close to ready for release?  Well, turns out that contrary to previous Microsoft statements, there will be a second full Release Candidate made available for testing.  Vista RC2 will be made available to testers this coming Friday.  This will be numbered build 5743, staying within the 5700 range, reserved for the eventual RTM copy.

Reports from Microsoft say that the current bug count in RC1 is down to 1400 bugs, but they have to hit 500 or lower before the final build can be packaged and sent to manufacturing.

Oh goody, I will just love to have a new OS that has 500 bugs. Joy Joy..
One positive aspect of Vista coming out will be MAYBE the ridiculous amount of Vista walls, skins, themes, icons and other general garbage may subside.

only 500 bugs.

Just a little friendly word to those who think this is a lot. The version of XP you're using probably has far more than 500 bugs. When you take into consideration that Windows has MILLIONS of lines of code, 500 bugs is a pittance, and keep in mind there are large parts of Vista that were re-written from the ground up. Also, those 500 bugs will very likely be things you'll never see, if they are allowed to go as a known issue then they are infrequently encountered defects and therefore not show stoppers.

I'm running 5728 currently.. The "limited" RC1 Beta.. I'd say it's around the same as 5600 though to be honest (the first RC1).. All I am unhappy about is my Logitech MX5000 not working properly. Meaning it's USB Bluetooth Hub still doesn't work. However, even if Logitech doesn't update by Vistas RTM, I'll still buy it. I'm convinced it's a far superior OS to any others I've used before. Windows, Mac or Linux based.

I hope my computer can handle RC2. RC1 refused to install. All the betas worked flawlessly.

Also, you can download the .iso's and mount them on a virtual drive instead of buring to DVD's/ordering. It's legal, and you can do it free with Deamon tools. Deamon tools kinda sucks... but its free. Alcohol 120% is payware, but much better .

Yeah, I'll have to do that for RC2.. I'm out of DVDs..

My Bro has issues with RC1. He has a Raedon 9800 and a 24-Bit Audigy 2 Card.. Wonder if that's your issue as well?...

Luckily, I haven't had any issues with my setup.. Though I'm rated a "1" since my 9100 on-board doesn't support Aero. Otherwise, I'd be a 4.

I had a 3.8 I think for the Beta right before RC1.

I use nVidia GeForce FX 5200, 1 GB Ram... umm its not a horrible computer, and its pretty good. I'll try out RC2 this Friday and hope it works lol.

I have 3 DVD's left and I plan to use them to backup other data, so virtual drives are nice. Just 4 (almost 3) more days to go until I can test this sucker out .

Does this mean we should be thankful it doesn't cost more?!?

and a 24-Bit Audigy 2 Card..

I'm running a 24-bit Audigy 4 card without issue....last time I looked on the Creative site, they were only providing Vista driver support for Audigy 4 and above cards, tho that could change. Creative noted that the entire Audigy series (and above) would eventually receive Vista driver support.

I really like Vista RC1 and IF RC2 is made available, I'll surely download and install it. My PC is rated as a "5" and I haven't encountered any functional problems with the O/S. Yes, the application and driver compatibility issue is going to be the caveat for many I suspect . . . it will be for me. Therefore, I'm not going to rush out and buy Vista when it is first released. I would guess it will take at least a month or more for software and hardware manufacturers to catch up. And I also have little doubt that updated drivers will not be made available for LOTS of models as the manufacturers will take advantage of the situation and put pressure on people to buy new "Vista compatible" hardware from them.

I seem to be one of the few people that have had no driver issues with Vista. I installed the beta to a secondary hard drive, and booted into Vista. It searched for drivers and found them all. About 8-10 I think. Some for gamepads, my camera, my audio, mouse, keyboard, and I think some others I wasn't sure what they were for.

Do most people install the Vista Beta/RC's over top of their WinXP OS, or on a partition/secondary drive?

I still run XP Pro as my primary OS, with XP Home set up for gaming on a seconary drive, and Vista RC1 installed on a third drive.

I've heard of people installing Vista over XP as their main OS, but given that MS advises Vista is still in development, purely for evaluation purposes and should NOT be used as a primary OS, it's not something I would do. However, I've found Vista RC1 to be quite stable and a big improvement on beta 2, with better driver support and more of my hardware/programs working.

The only real issue I have is the print/imaging software for my HP 1210 all-in-one does not install correctly, though Vista has recognised the hardware okay and is perfectly usable via its function buttons. It would be nice if HP and MS have been able to resolve the software issue in RC2, but if not it's no biggie as I can reboot into XP if I need to access the print/imaging programs.

no driver issues on my lap top.. though, it was 'vista ready'. my desktop still has no video ( ati is not making drivers for lower than radeon 9600s ) and my audigy 2 only has sound in the front 2 channels.

Don't understand why you've no video, wife's machine has a RadeOn 9550 256mb card and it runs the Vista desktop with Aero just fine with the most recent drivers....wonder if it could be monitor driver related?

As for your Audigy 2, Creative posted a notice stating it would receive Vista support in the nearish future, so hopefully you'll have surround sound soon. I have an Audigy 4 but don't have your problem as I run directly from the digital output to a Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5600 proccessor/amp. I thought it had grunt with the 5.1 speakers that came with it, but I recenty connected up my hi.fi's surround speakers and now it really kicks butt....unfortunately, suburban life and potential visits from the police deter me from really cranking it up.
