Pike Lake

Its 43 degrees this morning at Pike Lake....feels like 37. Its the latter part of September. Yesterday in Arkansas, it was 80 and thunderstorms. Down in Louisiana, it was 85.
I've been told by the locals here that the first snows typically start around the end of October. I'm not new to snow, but I've never had to deal with it on a long term basis. If we had a light dusting in Arkansas, it shut down the state. Here, its going to be a 4 month ordeal.
The trees are changing color around here. I noticed the first hint of color change a couple weeks ago when we were driving around with the real estate agent, looking for places to live. Now, two weeks later, things are starting to develop a nice golden color.
We live about a mile from Pike Lake Provincial Park, Saskatchewan. The park boundary is right across the street from the house here, and every morning I wake up, I see deer.....EVERYWHERE. I've been told by the neighbors to make sure to keep full coverage on my truck because hitting deer is the most common accident that happens here. Its not if you are going to need the insurance, its when you are going to need it. I've been extremely careful on the drives at night coming back from work, and I've seen no less than 10 to 20 deer grazing on the sides of the road. Its amazing.
Kathy and I spent some time walking through the park across the street. The trees are an odd mix of Aspen and other high altitude trees common to Colorado....nothing like you would expect a prairie to have.

While we were walking along a small ridgeline, the biggest buck I have ever seen, broke out of an Aspen thicket below us, and bounded across an adjacent hill. I've seen some big deer before, but this one was at least 300 lbs or better. I estimated him to be a 10 point buck, but the spread was the widest spread of any antlers I've ever seen. The really cool thing is the park is right across the street, so I can see them out the window. Of course I didn't have my camera to take a picture of it, but I do get lots of deer in the morning out the window.
So for Gary, here you go. Here is one of the local residents, a whitetail doe walking across the field in front of the house, taken this morning...just for you.
