1.31: Major economy & research bugs

I've run across two major bugss since updating to v1.31. I have no idea as to what chain of events led to these glitches appearing, as they both have been in the later game when there's been too much going on to attribute them to anything in particular.

In the first glitch, which has happened a few times in different games, my economic stats will suddenly go haywire. The latest occurrence was: Income 6656 BC, Spending 3221229461 BC, Net 1073711882 BC, Approval 0%. Then, just as suddenly a few turns later, it will go back to normal, except for a treasury of -2000 BC. Then, a few turns later, it will go haywire again. This cycle continues ad infinitum.

The second glitch, which has only happened once to date is research bug. It happened a short time after the latest economy bug that I described above. All unresearched technologies suddenly appeared with a research time of one week. Additionally, if a technology was researched, all technologies on that particular branch were made available. For example, I hadn't researched any Mass Driver technologies and Mass Driver Theory (along with all other techs) had a research time of one week; when I researched Mass Driver Theory all Mass Driver techs up to and including Black Hole Generator became researched and available in the Ship Designer. I suppose this may have to do with having the 3221229461 BC spend with 60% going into Research... A further issue is that although the same thing occurred with the Research techs, taking me from Neutrality Learning Centers all the way through Technology Victory in one week, there was no technology win.

I have screenshots of the economy bug but, don't know how to post them...

This is a scary bug. Anyone confirm this one? How is it replicated?

And how is the economy nerfed in this patch?

I have not had the research one but the economy one sounds familiar. I sent screenies and debug info along already.

There's a sticky that describes how to do it, follow the link below. I usually size it to 1024x768 (fits in the forum OK and is legible) and use the direct link that imageshack generates.

Sure sounds like some kind of underflow type of error to me, but software isn't my expertise. But I'd be interested in seeing your screenshots.

There's also a sticky on bug reporting.

And how is the economy nerfed in this patch?

The obvious thing is that approval is much harder to come by with a drastic reduction in the bonus provided by approval buildings. Populations were also reduced lowering the tax revenue a single farm will provide. As a result, taxes have to be run lower for longer and revenues top-out sooner. There's a lot of chatter by the devs about why this change was made and it does make sense. Unfortunately, the side effect is that it makes games longer and more tedious. Most people, including myself, are seeing a 30% to 50% length increase in an already long and drawn out game. There are some other factors that were "adjusted", but the approval and population changes have the most impact. BTW, if you're not playing Meteverse, you can simply modify the game's xml files and change these characteristics to whatever you like. Since Metaverse plays by a fixed set of rules, complaints relating to economy changes really only apply to Metaverse games. However, keep in mind that changing core xml files will set the cheat flag if you do decide to play Metaverse down the road. In that case, you'll need to reload the game beforehand.
