How do you break alliances?

I've looked in the game guide, but I couldn't find any mention of how to break off those pesky treaties. When I try attacking one of my allies ships, it claims I need to break the alliance first. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Foreign relations screen, where it would say "trade embargo", it no says "break alliance".

That's under the main picture of the race, and below espionage settings, if memory serves.

There's at least one other way to do it: pursuade another civ to attack your ally, and when the ally invokes the treaty, refuse to come to their aid. It's a little more effort, but you get the benefit of "Let's You And Him Fight".

That's also the only way to break an alliance with a minor civ.

I looked there, but it only says trade embargo. Are you supposed to be a member of the United Planets or something to break an alliance? Because I removed myself from the United Planets in hope that the alliance was a kind of law or something.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that there are no other civilizations left. I have destroyed them all. Only one.

Oh wait... I'm not in alliance. I'm a team with them. Anyway, how do you break up a team?

I don't think you can.
