Why the avatar?

Why the avatar?

or; what do we use to represent ourselves?

With the new format for the forums and Zoomba's article about putting up an avatar to be a "cool kid" (if you haven't read it yet, read this article here), many of us have been putting up (or changing) our avatars. It's gotten me to thinking - why do we pick what we pick?

For months my avatar was a portrait of Miguel de Unamuno, my favorite author. But with the new format, I felt I wanted a change. So now it's Holly, the hologrammatic computer program from my favorite BBC TV show, Red Dwarf. Norman Lovett played him just so well, as did Hattie Hayridge during the middle series . . . (Hattie's female Holly is my avatar on MSN Messenger.) I picked it because I'm just such a fan, and Holly is just so funny. Heh. I'm weird.

But the question then presents itself - why do we have the avatar that we do? Serenity has an actual avatar as her avatar . . . George Nash has a picture of himself . . . Zoo has a red-headed little something . . . I can't tell what Jennifer's is . . . BlueDev's is a cool flaming eye with a door or something . . .

So . . . what is it? What's your avatar and why do you use it?

Spill it already.

I borrowed mine from a NASA site.

I just love the way it looks and the stories it inspires in my mind when I look at it.

Here's a question...how do you interpret my avatar?

ummm, visually?

I'd prefer aurally, but there's no cool space sounds to go with it . . .

It was a well made, detailed film, and I enjoyed it very much.

Amen. and while Cruise did a pretty okay job, the rest of the cast is absolutely splendid. I loved the view into what exactly it meant to be a samurai.

Because creepy, eye things are cool.

I needed an icon for when I joined my GalCiv 2 metaverse empire (before I worked at Stardock), and I've always thought Master Chief looked super-cool, so I found a shot I liked and used that

Well, that's because Master Chief is super cool . . .

Mine is a badly photo-shopped image of a close up of my face and for no other reason than I didn't have anything else to pick from.

Jejejejejeje! Very nice, Maso. I always wondered if those were your eyes or not . . .

Oh yeah, they're mine. And they're so attractive, one can't stop looking at the other

Haha! That's the best excuse I've ever heard for being cross-eyed! (You're not really cross-eyed in the picture though...I don't see it anyway.)

I wondered about that picture too. But after reading Cade it makes sense. An alien planet with two suns. The picture came from NASA really? So a place like that really exists? What / where is it?

As for my avatar, it's ME! Doing a front walkover at the age of 29. The landing wasn't so pretty though. The problem is that I always land in a backbend rather than actually WALKING out of it. So I have to heave myself out of the backbend to a standing position, if it's a good day. Otherwise I just roll over and try it again.

Which leads me to wonder if I can do that whilst pregnant? Hmm...maybe I'll stretch out and give it a try. I'll be careful

If anything good comes of it, I'll have someone take a picture. After all, I'm an exhibitionist at heart.

I always wondered if that was you, Angela . . .

Mine was made for me by one of our WinCustomize artists.  It combines my old nick (JavaBrain) with my current nick (KarmaGirl).  Anybody who knows me knows how important coffee is to my survival

I wondered if a love for coffee was the motivation . . .

I use either a personal avatar, or the crystal ball.

The crystal ball to remind me that I actually need one because I'm not all that bright.

I've wondered what that was . . . a pearl, a crystal ball, some bauble . . .

Mine is an old picture of me. I guess it is so that the messages are more personal with an actual picture of myself showing. I like talking in person the best, but this is a way to personalize writing in a blog, I guess.
