Fast ships

I now have my new fast frieghter. After dragging my heels on creating a new frieghter I finally did. These suckers are fast, 32pc a week. I have all the trade goods and most of the galactic achievements, so this helps out with some speed in there. It also mounts (if memory serves) 6 Warp IV modules and its trade package. On the large galaxy I am on right now it can basically cross the whole thing in 2.5 turns.

Of course no way I can pack a warship with engines like that. It would be so lovely if I could.

In one game with me as the Yor, the 50% faster galactic event happened. As a result, I was equipped with constructor, colony and freight ships that had about 100 speed. Sure was fun, that game.

Actually, you can once you get to the end of the engines research line. Dreadnoughts with 30+ speed are then (just about) viable.

I like to run ships that are empty except for engines and life support. Then, when they come to an area of the map where I need to make a decision, I can upgrade that ship for whatever purpose is appropriate to that hull type (freighter, constructor, surveyor for cargo hulls, and "Just In Time" offense and defense mixes for the combat hulls).

Yes, there's the "baloon payment" at the end when the ship takes its final form, but I'm willing to pay that price for the extreme flexibility it gives me. The template design has a lot more engines and life support than the final forms, which allows me to move them way the heck out to the frontiers quickly.

I can do the same with people-haulers, upgrading them to troop ships at the last moment, which is kind of like having a cruise ship full of happy-go-lucky tourists transform into a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude. heh.

@shiva
That would be "Balloon Payment".
Now that transport/colony ship strat, WOW !!!!!!!!
I will be adding that to my current game post haste...
Many thanks, keep those ideas coming.
