Galactic Civilizations II 1.3 due next Thursday

Latest beta on Stardock Central

We have finally set an official date for Galactic Civilizations II v1.3.  This free update has many dozens of new enhancements over the existing version based on player feedback (see the Journals for lists).

If you already have Galactic Civilizations II, you can try out the latest beta version of 1.3 by downloading Stardock Central from the downloads area and making sure "show pre-release versions" is checked.

Just to let you know, the minimap repaint issue still persists with beta 3x.

I hope you keep update 1.2 as a downloadable option.
1.3beta 3x feels like a bit different of a game to me because of the tweaks.

Thanks for fixing the invisible turn button extending over the minimap -- that one got me a lot.

I do see the tile issues that Moosetek is all frustrated with. But whatever works for the AI is fine by me and from what I've seen - I'm beatable on the suicidal difficulty now and with update 1.2 I didn't feel I was ( with the games I like playing ).

And thanks for the upgrades, the game has evolved into a very good game that I'm sure I'll enjoy for years.

Well, apparently an "intelligent" AI also means it's sort of exploiting the fact that building mainly stock markets etc. gives you the perfect start into the game. I personally think that this is a trick that should stay reserved for human players, as its simply unrealistic for the AI to act this way. I hope this will be fixed eventually..

What exactly do you mean about the stock markets? Are you saying to start the game by building a few of them on each of your planets vs. building factories or research centers.
You can't build stock markets at the start of the game.

he meant that if you go and research stock markets as soon as possible, your economy gets a good early boost.

Researching technologies and building improvements improves your civilisation, you say?

Wow... this changes everything!

Are they going to fix the starbases? it is way too cheap and easy to build/upgrade starbases. It should cost way more than 200bc to build a starbase, and the price should go up as most of the galaxy is colonized by the different civs. All upgrades should cost money not just battlestations. Correct me if im wrong. I do like most changes for 1.3 however.

Huh, most people are complaining that starbase have been made too weak!

It would be smarter if the AI put a farm and maybe 2-3 markets, instead of no farm and 7 markets.
The higher population will increase income a lot better than just more econ buildings. Plus it would make it much harder to invade and take planets.

Building that many econs is shooting ones own foot. Sure, you can buy ships more, but if you can't research fast enough you fall behind very quickly. And loading up the planet with econ leaves no room to buy any buildings anyway. So is the strategy now to just buy military ships in droves?
It doesn't work. By the time I get attacked my ships outclass theirs so far it is pathetic. Simple numbers won't do it if the fleets total attack is less than my single ships defenses.

And this last game they have been building too many econs as well. It didn't show up as much early in the game, but by the time the Drengin attacked me and I began to take developed planets it was obvious, although not quite as bad as that first game with this version.

This version is far less of a challenge, I think.

In that case I suggest you create your own mods. With a few AI tweaks you can make the the computer controlled races much better allowing it to compete or beat the player much at lower difficulty settings.

Moosetek: as I've mentioned, a few times, we're not seeing that. See Journals.  Every computer player has its own AI for handling planet building so it's also extremely unlikely that every player is doing this.

That supposes that the AI is moddable through scripts. And it is not the case: the AI behavior is coded in C++ classes and doesn't rely on script

In v1.2 the AI will terraform planets as soon as it gets the technology, even if the planet has free tiles and no factories. Thus in v1.2 it is possible for the human player to cripple the AIs planet development by trading or gifting terraforming techs. Has this been corrected in v1.3?
