Emu Roundup!

Whew...

Well, I had to get rid of my birds (emus, chickens, and ducks) before I went off to college. No one else would take care of them....so they had to go bye bye. I had about five other guys out with me at 7:30 this morning trying to catch two big ol' birds. The pasture they were in is roughly half an acre...if that much. A decent size, but not that big. It took about an hour and a half to wear them down so that they could be subdued. One of them took a decent swipe at me but I blocked with a cane....I could be in the hospital getting stiched up right now...thank God for sticks, eh? Finally got around to catching the first one when it laid down to rest....still put up one hell of a fight before we tied it up. The last one was trickey...it actually pushed through a gap in the fence and barbwire and got out....ran it back to the fence and pushed through again to get back inside. Twenty minutes later and we nailed that one as well. Only injury I got was in the last minute when I was lifting the bird over the fence...barbwire scratched me....not too bad but it bled a lot.

Let me tell ya...catching emus is a lot of work....and kind of dangerous.

I didn't know you had such birds. You should have made a video, that would have been fun to watch! At least you did the right thing since no one would be able to take care of them. Good on you!

Funny you should say that...some of the guys said the same thing....it was kind of funny watching grown men chase a bird...and being rather afraid of it. I swear, you tell them that a bird will disembowel you with a good kick and then they act all afraid. ::

but you sure tell a good story!

Thanks

I don't have too many stories to tell...but I like to tell the few that I have well.

Thanks for the sunday laugh!

No problem.

I saw Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs do an Ostrich round up. They used a black sock to slide over their eyes so they could be pushed where you want them.
I have played golf on a course where some Ostriches ran loose (eating balls, and picking up clubs. "Ooh, shiny!") and can see being careful.
Good luck in school.
