stardock central - worst thing ever!

I've just bought GalCiv2 and was looking forward to a nice easy download and some gaming last night - i love the idea of being able to just download the game instead of having to try to find it in shops. But this stardock central thing is just awful. i downloaded the whole galciv2 thing (installed according to sc) and when i try to run it, i can't because of a missing dll. so i reinstall the game thinking it will probably just redownload the 140ish mb of the main game, but no, it decides to redownload everything - so now i've got another half a day of downloading what i've already downloaded in front of me.

is there a normal link somewhere where i can just download the program without using this awful in-between?

Cheers,
Frustrated new user

IE is the browser taht works for me. i always use firefox but i cant write any comment with both. and reading is hard with firefox because most of the grafical gimmicks fly inside the written text.
also, same prob with both browsers, they most of the time while loading threads in this forum, they are using 99% of the cpu and the broser freezes. many times they stal without a warning. i have uninstalled some new microsoft NET crap, maybe thats the prob. btw, i also have win2k.

and i can post i i go through the other door:
i go to stardock.com and select at the top FORUM and go this way posting. i cant post with sdc ar while in the pages that appear in black. its this white/bright appearance where i only can post.
this is really annoying. i hate those gimmicks and would like prefer a fast loading, text based and well designed look that is the same for all browsers and use the less of java-stuff as possible!

Did you try with the latest version of Firefox and check your settings to make sure nothing could be interfering with the page's functioning? (it is very javascript-heavy) Running the latest version of FF, the forums work flawlessly for me via browser.galciv2.com.

I'd hardly call constant crashes convenient, but that's just me

Gawd I hate the software industry. I can't tell you how much time I've lost and will never get back dealing with computer software. I'm so fed-up with upgrade hell and problematic software I could spit. Thanks Bill Gates.

So, rather than correcting an incompatability issue involving an OS that is *still* supported by software makers and a browser that is considered standard, you would have me use another application requiring *my* resources and giving me another GD software product to deal with. This is not a global problem. No other site crashes my browser.

That's like going to the doctor and saying, "it hurts when I bend my knee", and the doctor says, "don't bend your knee."

Sorry for the rant, and do I appreciate the wonderful job all of you do [Stardock], but that comment fired-up a very tired and sore subject for me. I sometimes wonder if computers are worth the trouble. And this comes from someone who is fairly adept with the technology.

Speaking as someone who despises the Microsoft standard, and constantly being called by parents to fix things that shouldn't, if windows was half decent, be happening, and also as someone who just spent 2 weeks cut off from computers and civilisation, yes. They're worth it

No other site that you visit, anyway. I know at least one time this month already, there's been a 'windows update' that caused IE6 on Win2k to crash under certain circumstances (HTTP1.1 server with compression on, IIRC). Who knows what other issues there have been in the past, but even the worst, most malformed javascripts should never be able to crash a browser on their own (hang it, perhaps, but not crash it). And the site works flawlessly for most in whatever browser they use, AFAIK. I know it does for me with Firefox 1.5, but obviously YMMV. Browsers can be unpredictable beasts, especially IE.

I only use IE (I'm lazy) and it's never had an issue with the forums.

Actually, these forums work better in IE than they do in FireFox.

I have the scriptblocker plugin set to allow the domain, but for some reason, the photo upload feature doesn't work at all in FireFox. Works fine in IE.

I'd rather surf the site with FireFox, but I think the heavy javascript scares it.

I didn't realize people had so many Steam problems. I see where the hatred comes from now.

No other site causes this. Others have also posted that the forum crashes their browser so I'm not the *only* one who has this problem WWW Link

It seems to happen when the medals are downloading. If I "untrust" the site, the medal scripts don't run and my broswer doesn't crash. Here's the error that's getting logged;

Application Failure iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106 in pngfilt.dll 6.0.2800.1106 at offset 0

My guess is a problem with one of the medal images or the way the script is handling them.
