svchost.exe application Error

Freeze at Shutdown

Ok, so I must have errored when I searched this site for, "svchost.exe Application Error", and found nothing, but I found more than 1 mention associated with WB through Google. I liked this app and would like to give it another shot, but I don't think, "The best workaround I've found is to unload WindowBlinds 5 before shutting down, a small annoyance but, it solves the problem." (even for $19.95) is an acceptable solution. I uninstalled WB according to the help file instructions, and I'd like to put it back on but, I'll have to look elsewhere for my customization needs i.e. until Stardock announces a fix for this in a new build or version. justforlooks

that's not the full system info report
it should include the files listed with dates/times

(even for $19.95) is an acceptable solution. I uninstalled WB

considering you uninstalled it, did you mean unacceptable?

Here's a clusty search:

Here's a WC forum search:

If it was WB, I'm guessing there would have been more.

I actually had more typed, but when to edit an error, and stuff kept disappearing in edit mode

Thanks for your reply. "that's not the full system info report it should include the files listed with dates/times". I copy/pasted those system info lines from another post because I removed WB prior to posting. They are identical to those I remembered seeing in my WB config window from System Information. I meant what I typed, "but I don't think, "The best workaround I've found is to unload WindowBlinds 5 before shutting down, a small annoyance but, it solves the problem." (even for $19.95) is an acceptable solution. ". I wouldn't continue using any app, even if it was free, that coughed up an error at shutdown, which forced me to take some action such as clicking the cancel button in the error window, or unloading the app before shutting down. And yes, I found a lot of information about this kind of error (svchost.exe) including those three from your WC link. But of course I was only interested in those that had to do with WB, and preferably WB 5.01. That made me wonder as you said, "If it was WB, I'm guessing there would have been more.." why there weren't more post about it. My machine is clean. It's running quick and error free. I've never seen this error message before this instance associated with WB (before removing WB, I unloaded it to see if I still got the shutdown error and did not get it) not on this PC, which I've had for three months, or the previous two. I'm at a loss to isolate a cause for the error. Except for, as I said in my original (unedited) post, things started going south after I held down Ctrl and clicked the ("glow effect") upper right X to keep a resized window opening full. Immediately that window and several others were no longer skinned, but after that, when I used other skins that were older, not having all the latest effects, they worked normally. Still. the shutdown errors continued unless I unloaded WB. Didn't mean to write a letter, but I thought that others might relate to somethings in this. justforlooks

"but I don't think,

oops, missed that part.

I don't think it's WB, but I'm technically challanged.

It was working fine prior to holding down ctrl and clicking the 'x', yes?

I'm tempted to try it... but not right now since I'm getting ready to head out of town.

After the uninstall, I'm guessing you have rebooted by now.

Was it a trial or paid version of WB?

If it was paid, was it a release version or beta version?

You might consider putting in a ticket with support.

You might also consider checking the info in the other links concerning svhost and checking to see what you have in your system... possible something there that has a "ctrl + 'x'" option in it.

Thanks for your reply, yes, it was working fine prior to holding down ctrl and clicking the X. It was a paid version. I unloaded WB, removed it via Add/Remove in the control panel, rebooted, deleted the C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\WindowBlinds folders because I had added additional skins to WB from this site. Best I recall that's what the instructions in the help file said. They also said WB could do some pretty "funky"? things to a system if it was put back on, but wasn't removed correctly. I've downloaded another installer and serial no., but I'm really hesitant to reinstall it because of those "pretty funky" things. This PC is being used for an internet college course and if I hose it my wife would not be happy. How do I "put in a ticket with support", through the links in the emails I received with my purchase - [email protected] or www.stardock.com/support? Is there another brave soul out there that will do the Ctrl X trick and see if anything happens... nah I wouldn't either, justforlooks

paid version entitles you to any new releases for a year.

download Stardock Central (SDC) https://www.stardock.com/products/sdcentral/.  It's a downloader/installer/uninstaller/updater/browser that keeps track for you.  Once installed, register your serial(s) via tools or clicking down on the bottom right.  It will also archive versions for you, to reinstall later or to rollback from one version to another.  Much better than add/remove.  When installed via SDC I believe WB won't show in add/remove, you'll need to use SDC.

To put in a ticket, go here: https://www.stardock.helpserve.com/.

I've hosed my system before - wife's classes don't start for a little while... if no other brave soul shows up, I'll get it a shot later in the week.

I'll give it a shot later in the week.

....you don't want to do that, honey.....

justforlooks:   Re-install the same version as Bichur has instructed (it will not show in Add/Remove) via SDC and if the error occurs again (and I doubt it will), then look in Administrative Tools/ Events and post what the error says. My guess is either a corrupted system file or something in the hive not shutting down properly (I don't believe it's WB per se) and either can be easily fixed.

svchost.exe ? I tried your ctrl+x and nothing happened, at all. But if I had your problem, I would take yrag's advice. Seen him fix quite a few WinXP problems in the forums, especially a couple of the admins...

Sir Birchur, scorpio-logic, yrag, I ran CHKSDK (not sure how effective that is) and then installed Stardock Central and WB through that, just like you all told me. I'm using aerial by danilloOc (same skin I was using when I did the Ctrl X thing) and everything is just like it was before my svchost.exe error - crisp & snappy. I've only shutdown twice so far, but no error messages! Thanks, nice to have WB back, justforlooks - Wife's happy too!!!

Ok, it's been about a week and now two of these shutdown errors in two days. I probably should unload WB for the next week and see if like last time, these errors go away. But yrag mentioned, in my previous post about this, that
My guess is either a corrupted system file or something in the hive not shutting down properly (I don't believe it's WB per se) and either can be easily fixed.

And I've seen other posts about this error. In one instance, they nailed it down to Spyware Doctor, and upgrading to ver. 4.0 seemed to end the messages. I'm still liking aerial and WB, but how to keep them without these shutdown errors? Is there a way to ID conflicting apps? Using XP H.E. SP2, Windows Defender Beta2, NOD 32, BOClean, nothing new since last post. Thanks, justforlooks

What version of WB does SDC say you have?

Where do I find that? I thought I saw 5.01.006 once, but I don't remember where. I can't even get to this post through SDC.

I see this in C:\Program Files\ Sardock\SDCentral\Installed

That's an interesting error..........if you have an HP printer, update the drivers. A more likely cause is an 'un-wanted' process running (as in malware). Look in Taskmgr/ Processes and do a search for anything you can't identify.

All Dell here, including printer. I don't see anything that looks "un-wanted" in processes. Compared to most around here though, I'm far from being PC savvy. Oh yeah, HJT LOG looks like it did a few days ago.

Open SDC, click on Object Desktop on the left, find WB on the right - columns: installed, available, updated

Since this only happens on a shutdown, let's eliminate any software issues (excluding a corrupted system file). Download and install this and see if the problem goes away. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en#QuickInfoContainer

If the problem persists, then uninstall it through 'Add/Remove' and we'll look elsewhere.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service seems a bit much, but I'll do it if you've had sucessful resolutions having others use it before, hopefully more than one. There's only one (Admin) account used on this PC; only one profile as far as I know. I'm already (possibly) having Problems with .006, I'm not crazy about running a beta version.

Yrag's advice will either help or not, but it won't cause harm as far as I know.
He's helped a lot of people here.

If he advised me to, I'd do it. He's helped me out before.
