No text

Literally.

I just got home, installed my brand new, retail copy of GalCiv 2, clicked 'update game', downloaded and installed the update, and ran the game.

The opening cutscene played as normal, but when I got to the main menu, there was no text. All the options - new game, load game, metaverse, and so on - were just empty buttons. I can click on them - indeed, I have - but I still have no text. However, I guess I clicked on 'campaigns', because it came up with a description of a scenario in small, blue text, which was perfect. I guess I'm missing the main font or something?

I have the newest drivers for my video card (Radeon 9500 Pro)

Sorry for the delay in response. The GalCiv 2 team has been busy with the expansion pack, but I will send your issue to the appropriate person and they will get back with you shortly.

This can usually be fixed by rebooting your PC. If the issue still persists after that, let us know.

Hi Kyrnathon,

Yeah, I've heard of this happening before. Try restarting your system before playing the game after updating. This happens on random computers and has to do with the font getting downloaded and not properly recognised by Windows.

Let me know if the problem persists after the reboot!

edit: Guess I'm too slow

I tried restarting and re-installing (with and without patch). Nothing worked. I had an activation error when I re-installed, but that's being sorted out now with Support. Any chance just getting the font from someone else and copying it over my version would work? Of course, there's always the chance that it'll work now, albeit when I can get it to run, but I'd rather not rely on that.

You could try turning off anti-aliasing.  Since you have an older card, it will probably help performance once you get into the game anyway.

Try copying these files into your GalCiv2 fonts folder:

http://sd.stardock.com/mike/files/gc2-fonts.exe

If that doesn't work, you may need to copy the files into your windows font folder.
