Quick thoughts on recent headlines and news around 6-2-06

Up first: Anna Nicole Smith confirms she is preggers. My thoughts: uh, I'm not sure whether to start with Why? first, or instead lead with Who would have? -- either way, both are where my mind goes for that one.

(Without trying to come off as an arrogant, male chauvanist pig, I gotta say the window on Anna Nicole slammed shut a long time ago... well before she hooked up with the billionaire actually. Yick!)

Next for comment: Diet Pill Maker Sues 'Sopranos' Actor -- Joseph R. Gannascoli who played "Vito Spatafore" on the Sopranos (who suffered -- depending on how you look at it -- an (un)timely death after coming out of the closet and then trying to deny his proclivities when he returned to his old stomping grounds) apparently can't catch a break. He lost his job as spokes person for Stacker 2 diet/nutrition pills, apparently because the company felt he wasn't doing enough to promote the product. He is now apparently helping sell a competing product, but either way, if the past few episodes are any indication, his diet stopped working soon after he was "found out" on The Sopranos.

More: Plane owned by Pat Robertson crashes, 3 dead. Pat Robertson not aboard. Can you hear the collective groans of many nations?

Still more: the economy may be cooling a bit, housing boom is apparently going out with a whimper, and employment is starting to cool also. Why then do we have recent reports saying that H1-B visa applications are "used up" for the next few years and tech companies want permission to hire more international employees to stock the tech jobs they have open with. What happened to tech workers from the U.S.A. getting a good shot at those jobs? Where are the recruiters to help fill them and why aren't students that are in the system now working towards those positions?

And btw, Mr. Bernanke (Fed Reserve Chairperson) better hope he has the formula right and that he and his buddies on the Federal Reserve haven't pushed us towards a recession. I say this not because I'm a fan of George W., but because I know what the mistakes of the Federal Reserve cost us all - jobs. Lots of jobs. Income for many, revenue for the government from "the many." If the Fed didn't get this right, the people of the U.S.A. will pay a heavy price for the mistake, and for years we'll hear of the horrors of the Bush administrations (both George H.W. and George W.) and the recessions they over-saw. Sadly most people won't remember at all who was really at fault - an over-agressive fed that was concerned more with inflation than with really exercising proper care and caution in over-seeing the economy.
