WinCustomize Summer Road Map

WinCustomize Summer Road Map

A preview...

WinCustomize.com has continued to grow in popularity which in turn has resulted in increasing problems with scaling.  The problem is one that long-time users are very familiar with -- income from the site via ads and subscriptions does not grow linearly with traffic.  We don't want to kick people off, we want to instead reward people for supporting us more.

So what are we doing? What do we have in store?

First, let me say that the next 18 months will, in my opinion, be the most significant months in skinning EVER.  A lot of cool stuff is thanks to projects going on with Microsoft that I can't talk about.  But Windows Vista is going to offer a lot of opportunities for skinners.  Stardock itself is working on a bunch of new programs to that end.  We're in the calm before the storm.

And right now is the time for WinCustomize to get its act together.  The pathetic performance, the random error messages, etc. These are all things that are the result of having millions of people visiting but not having the people or infrastructure to handle it.  This summer, we're going all out to solve this.

Phase #1: New Master Database

The first phase will begin next Wednesday. T-man will do a warning announcement about it.  On Wednesday we move to a new master database server. It is the MCP of our system you could say. All mirrors originate from this server.  The one we have is pretty decent but it's become overwhelmed.  The new server is the fastest, most powerful computer I've ever dealt with.  It has 8 cores. 64-bit. 12 gigs of RAM.  And a lot of new code to make the most of it is being put on-line.

So on Wednesday, we expect to switch over.  Such a switch is going to almost certainly have issues so Wednesday and Thursady are likely to be bumpy on all of Stardock's sites and services.

Phase #2: Site Optimizations

The second phase will involve a set of site optimizations. The home page will be redone on the backend. I don't know about you but often I click on my WC link and it takes 10 seconds for the site to show up.  This will go away with a new backend change to how the home page is handled.   It has already been done on GalCiv2.com so you can see how fast that site comes up even though it is actually more complex in some ways.

Phase #3: Site Layout changes

The forums are going to be re-designed to be easier to navigate and use.  This is going to put us on the path of what is called the WC2K7 project which is the next generation version of the site.

More information will be available via someone's profile such as what they've recently done so you can interact with each other more.

Once this is done, we will take a break and do the GUI Olympics (GUI Championships 2006).  That will take up about a month and a half then we'll get back to the site.

Phase #4: WinCustomize 2K7

The goal (not promise) is to have 2K7 done by the end of this year -- BEFORE Windows Vista.  A lot of new features and skinining types will be added to the new system.

For skinners, a major change will occur.  Skinners who achieve MASTER access will have the right to sell their skins directly on WinCustomize.com.   If you are familiar with DesktopGadgets.com that was essentially an experiment for us to see if we could put together a system to do it on a small scale. This would be done on a large scale.

Of course, to get MASTER access skinners would have to work their way up (Citizen->Apprentice->Master Apprentice->Journeyman->Master).  And to do that will require lots of skins and themes and such.  So don't worry, WC won't suddenly become full of premium skins.  And in fact, as history has shown with Pixtudio and others, commercial skinning has generated a good chunk of the free skins and commercial skinners help build their reputations with free content.

The skinner will name their price and then split the net income 50/50.  If the user is a WinCustomize subscriber, they will get a 20% discount on the price of that skin.  In this way, skinners can earn some income from their skins and WinCustomize can hopefully generate enough revenue to hire more people to improve the overall quality of service. A true win-win situation (right now WC is a significant drain on Stardock even if you count half its costs as "marketing").

At present, WinCustomize only survives because of volunteer admins (like Jafo) and the volunteer moderators.  I think most regulars would agree that it would be good if some people (starting with the volunteers) could have the option to actually work on WinCustomize full-time to help make it a better place.

Phase #5: Windows Vista Era begins

The new programs from Stardock and new features Microsoft is working on that we're either extending or in themselves provide customization opportunities will create whole new sections on WinCustomize and help greatly expand the scope of the site beyond what we have today.

This sounds pretty good to me.

Looks like a couple people aren't willing to pay for skins, but I don't think there's enough information to say 'yes' or 'no' about it. If a WB is $20, I doubt a lot of people would pay that much. If it were $4 or $5, though, many more people would be inclined to purchase it. Especially if it were more than a WB; like a WB, ObjectDock background, an icon here or there, some DX things...

I'd definately pay a few bucks for a whole package like that.

I would like to volunteer and help in any way needed as well... Great to see our community grow

What I don't understand is all the comments that it is a good thing to pay for skins when they are now free.
I have some issue's with the concept of paying every year for some piece of software which in itself doesn't do a thing, it gives users the possibility to create skins and share these skins with the community.

My problem with this concept: two years ago I bought a skin 'Universe Metal', which I liked very much. Then a new version of WindowBlinds was released AND a new version of 'Universe Metal' for this new WB version, but you had to pay again for this updated skin. Welcome to the future!

To be fair, I allready canceled my subscription. So, you may do with my comments what you want. I no longer was willing to pay for a badly supported product which (in my opinion) tried to be a pre-release of Windows Vista and all it's features... I wait for the real deal and hope that Microsoft doesn't go the same way as StarDock and asks for a yearly contibution...

Sorry for my bad English, but I am not English, so I really don't care

Meaning WinCustomize.com? In order for the site to be supported, it needs to show some form of revenue. Surely you cant expect Stardock to foot the bill for the ENTIRE website?! A site this huge costs hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to support, and its *supposed* to be 'self-sufficient'. Yeah right, thats not gonna happen. Stardock developes and supports this site as much as possible, but they also need to focus efforts more on projects that give an influx of money. Developers dont grow on trees... I'm glad Stardock is able to put more focus on this website now!

I too am looking forward to the revamped site and all the new things in the pipeline. It's all looking good!!

Thing is, I don't see purchasing premium skins as paying extra over my subscription to support the site, but as a way of contributing to the skinners for their efforts and to the community as a whole...'cause in the end, everyone benifits in some way: ie, via the skins supported artists have freely contributed here. I've purchased several premium skins and novelty nick nacks in the past, and I'll continue to do so because I get that something extra special, and the additional injection of cash circulates to help keep the skinners and community viable. Now what's wrong with that????

Skins are a commodity like any other.

And they are an artform like any other.

As with ALL things in this world people have freedom of choice...to have or to have not...to buy or not to buy.

If it is good....if ANYTHING is good...if you as an individual...if you as a consumer...deem it worth THE PRICE then you will pay.

If not, you won't.

Please do NOT condemn others their willingness to pay for value simply because you are a 'NOW/ME Generation' that demands/maintains that a free-market economy means it MUST be free or you will just take it anyway.

Exactly why SHOULDN'T an artisan be paid for what he creates?

Because he wasn't before?

Get a dose of reality, people.  Nothing EVER is totally 'free'.  Someone pays.....somewhere.

A declaration of a cancellation of subscription is never going to be seen as a noble act....or even a self-righteous one....but simply a slight on all those who currently provide you with FREE content...and who will continue to do so irrespective of the relative few who may be charging.

I'd love to see the site working better. I liked the old site but I understood the needs which drove the "upgrade". Hopefully WC2007 will come off a little better. One for the wish list, I hate pastel blue.....

As to the sales of skins....there's already a "working" example out there. You just need to take a look at Desktopgadgets.com to know if it'll work or not. Seems like the majority of gadgets offered are free.

time's money!

Not only that, the programs skinners use to create skins (freely shared or not) don't come cheap, either....nor do updates to the most recent tools to take advantage of the more modern technologies: ie, per pixel, etc. So behind the time and effort, there's also a cost to skin creation...and like any other, skinners have to support themselves, the passion behind those skins they so freely share. Okay, so a skinner might charge a moderate sum for a skin here and there, but that's fine and the majority will remain openly shared because that's the nature of the beast, so to speak.

I for one welcome the opportunity to purchase quality skins, not only because they offer a little something extra to enhance my desktop, but to put something back in when I lack the ability to create anything of note to share here.

Okay, so it's not for everyone, but bring it on anyway...not everyone will want to participate, but it provides the option for those of us who do

Aaargh.... X|

So, I wasn't at WC in June 2006 [I wasn't even a teenager then ;) ] and when I read the title and stuff, it got me excited for another forum update.

Stop these necrothreads....or we'll have more 2004-ish posts active than 2008 ones ;P
