Nice little blurb in the Arts etc. section of The Washington Times on Wednesday, May 17, 2006.
Quick summary, it says that "uber-diva Barbra Streisand and TV actor James Brolin" (her squeeze), millionaires many times (at least between them) shouldn't be expected to pay $20 for a pair of tickets to see any movies.
Streisand and Brolin went to see M:I III at a Manns theatre and went out of their way to visit a particular theatre, looking for a particular theatre employee, just so they could ask for him and get free entry and VIP treatment to see the flix.
When questioned about it, Streisand's press rep. said "it's customary for "major stars" to get into movies for free," adding "It's a professional courtesy that many theatres extend to film stars."
Nice to know that in this screwed up world we live in that the "haves" can make the little people give them VIP treatment and can avoid paying any "petty cash" to see the work product of their friends in the biz. Never mind that when regular folks take measures to see current release films for free, the MPAA, RIAA and other entertainment related property rights Nazi's smack down the thiefs and pirates and decry the loss of money for all of Hollywood. How about we remind everyone yet again that people like Streisand are sitting on large piles of cash, demanding ever more of it for their own products, and take, take, taking it all from "regular folks" so that they too can be sure to treat their friends in the entertainment biz to VIP treatment for free.
Ugh, it all makes me wanna puke. We get preached to by people like Streisand, told who to vote for (NO THANKS!!!) by them, and told we aren't doing enough to help whatever the cause du jour is. Meanwhile the same people are going out for an evening of entertainment and leaving their purses and wallets at home, helping to jack up the ticket prices for the rest of the paying public (helping to keep the rest of us at home, thanks!) and then scolding us and crying rivers of tears when theatres see smaller crowds.
