Look in device manager and see if are any yellow question marks or red "X's" listed.

Questions:

1 - Did you reinstall or update the video drivers after reinstalling XP?

2 - Did you install the audio drivers after reinstalling XP?

Look in device manager and see if 'there' are any yellow question marks or red "X's" listed.

Sorry, forgot to proof read before submitting.

Note - in case you are unfamiliar with device manager, you access it via "right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button".

Right-click any device you want to update drivers for and select "Update Driver" option and use the wizard to install updated drivers (make sure you either have the driver files in a folder somewhere, or on a removable media disc).

Depending on what type of cards you have: (video- ATI, nVidia...) (soundcard- Creative/Soundblaster, Diamond...)

1. Install drivers from the original CD for both the video card and sound card, if you have them. Then check the version and go to the manufacturers website and find updates.

2. If not, go to the website of the manufacturer for each card and download the latest version of drivers and install.

If you have onboard devices you can try removing them through the device manager and let Windows find the device and reinstall them.

There are actually a couple of ways to update drivers.

The first thing you need is the drivers, which you would aquire either on the disc that came with the hardware, or via the manufacturer's web site.

Once you have the drivers, you usually do one of the following:

1 - Double-click a downloaded ".exe" driver installer file to install, or insert the CD that came with the hardware and select the option to install the driver(s).

2 - Use the Device Manager, which I indicated above, and right-click the device and select "Update driver" option. At this point, you are usually asked if you want to allow the wizard to check the internet for a compatible driver (I normally select "No") on this one due to my already having the driver file on hand. The next dialog screen asks you if you want Windows to automatically install the drivers, which you would say "Yes" to if you have the drivers on a CD that came with the hardware. If you have the driver files in a folder on your computer, then you would say "No" to Windows automatically installing the drivers and then on the next dialog screen select the "Include this location in the search" and browse to the folder with the driver(s) in it. Once the selections have been made, you click "Next" and Windows will then install the drivers. Note - you usually need to reboot after installing a video driver.

What does device manager say about the video adapter (listed under "Display adapters") and audio (listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers", and will usually say "______ Audio")?
There is no video adapter or Display adapters shown and the only audio is Audio Codecs that says it has no updates.

Are there any "Unknown devices" showing? - sorry if you already answered via the "red X's" answer.

If not, boot into BIOS settings (by hitting the appropriate key to "Enter Set-up" during boot) and see if the BIOS recognizes any video and or audio devices.

Also, what is the manufacturer and model of your computer, and is it 'stock', or have you installed any additional hardware.

Well, I have to go for the evening.

It sounds like you may need to install the "Chipset" drivers if Device Manager does not see any unknown devices.

These chipset drivers (as well as the video and audio drivers) can usually be found on the computer manufacturer's web site by going to the support\downloads section and input the model number to see the available downloads.

If you happen to have a Dell, you would go to Dell's website and use the "Service Tag" number and then select the operating system to see all available software downloads (including the drivers). In this case, Dell gives you "executable" files which you simply double-click after downloading, and follow the prompts to install the new drivers.

The other option is to go the the hardware device manufacturer's site and input the hardware model number and find the drivers for your operating system.

Good luck.
