Suggestion: Civilization borders.

Suggestion: Civilization borders.

Defined borders for our civilizations.

Hey guys. I was thinking... I know it has been discussed before in the past, but I wanted to bring it up again.

I think it would be great if we could define our civilizations borders. I think what it would represent is our watched and protected space. A perfect way to go about doing this, so you could start small and expand bigger, would be to play off of influence. Depending on how much influence you have, you would be able to allocate a certain number of squares to be defined as your civilizations borders. So say... you have X amount of influence, it gives you X amount of squares to add to your borders, which you then click and define.

These 'defined borders' would prevent opposing civilizations from being able to enter those spaces unless you allow them the ability to, and if they wanted to enter them anyways... they would have to declare war. Unarmed ships like trade ships however, would be able to pass through to do their business.

What do you guys think? Impossible to incorporate into the game? I think it would alleviate the problem if enemies just being able to waltz around anywhere within your space.

In another post on this same topic, someone said that the influence zones are not borders and that the devs adopted the current real-life policy of "Freeom of the seas". Beyond a certain distance from land, no one may claim part of the ocean. Same principle here. I wouldn't want someone declaring war on me because I'm passing through their territory.

So, if they're just traveling from one end of your territory to a location beyond the other side, I don't see a problem with it. On the other hand, I agree they shouldn't be allowed to just park ships or bases close to planets without consequences. I can't stand when someone surrenders to me and their enemy has an armada of transports next to the planets that are now mine.

I do agree that the communication window needs a "threat" option. When you choose it, whatever you're asking of the other civ is clearly understood to be a "do it or else", regardless of what your relations are. Also a "remove these ships/bases from my area". The AI can do that to us. Only fair that we can do the same.

I'm another one who would like to see borders added to the game. Hope something feasible can be arrranged for GC2, and could perhaps be expanded on by the time we get to GC3. Done right, I think this would add an extra dimension to diplomacy, trade, intel / counter-intel, covert ops etc.

There's a lot of good ideas already suggested in this thread and others, and i hope Stardock can see the sense in adding this feature to the game.

I have a couple queries i have on how things are at the moment:

1. Am i right in thinking that if any rival factions ship passes within sensor range of one of my planets, they get all the intel on what is happening on that planet in terms of it's quality and what improvements have been built? Does this information then get passed on to the AI and added it to it's much desired / wanted list?

2. If i build a fleet or a secret new ship design kitted out with the latest weaponry close to one of my planets and a rival ship passes by, that the faction AI now "knows" about this?

If this is indeed the case then it would be good if you could shield some of this away from the AI until they found out about it through other means, i.e. - intel spending, covert ops.

The borders thing should be solved through diplomacy aka warning the other side. I hate starting a war just to whack a couple of errant scout ships

i would say that if a scout or two are in your territory that they would be consedered non combatants unless they are armed same with cargo ships

Expand diplomacy +1 !

My 2 cents...

When the touchy-feely Altarians park 25(!!!!) ships next to one of my planets, I tend to get a mite bit suspicious. They're too chicken to do anything about it, but if they were a human player it would be an unmistakeable threat. I don't think the answer is borders, but a 'move away from the high orbitals or I will blow your pretty fleet into hydrogen' option would be really nice for the diplomacy screen.

Come to think, MOO3 had an option for the tone of your discussion, ranging from pleading for your life to sneering arrogance. It was one of few things that game got right. It'd be nice to be able to politely request somebody avoid misunderstandings about the intentions of those troopships, beg them not to invade, or tell the Drengin to move that cruiser or lose it.

I agree that some way of telling the AI to f*** off and to stop building bases near MY planets would be great addition, be it with some kind of borders (in addition to the spheres of influence) or via direct diplomatic means.

I find myself killing a civ from time to time simply because their bases get on my nerves.
(Patience and understanding are virtues, I know... )

i would also say that the only time your patrol fleet would auto attack is if your are already at war with the affending ships otherwise the attack should be up to the player like now when ship /fleet is on auto move

I like the border idea.... even if it is only small and relative to the plant/system...... and we need more contact options with the AI.... I want to threaten it, scare it.... and tell it that I am gonna stomp it's alien ass into the ground....
