How do I get mods to work, ship designs, logo's etc?

Hi All,
Love the game lots, but I want to customise it a little. I've downloaded the Kingon ship update but can't get them to apear in the game and I'm following the instructions exactly.
I can't get downloaded logo's to show up either, again the instructions were followed (not difficult either).
I'm running 1.1.
Please help
