Upgrading Ships

Hi All,

Just started out with GalCivII and I've a query about ship upgrading.

When I select a ship to to say upgrade the engines as I had researched some better ones, why do I get presented with a graphical of just the base hull??? No weapons, engines, hull parts armour etc. Surely I do not have to COMPLETELY rebuild/design the whole ship, just to upgrade one or even two components?? Is this a bug or what?

This is doing my head in, especially as when you are still learning the game one tends to start off using the bog standard ship designs provided.

And spending HOURS just trying to figure out how you got those wingy, sticky out bits so that it looks the same, just to upgrade ONE stupid engine type, never mind not knowing where the original engine went or how many, is NOT FUN - you do not even arrange the components in any logical order either - wingy bits, curvy bits etc all in groups would be useful.

In addition to have to keep dropping out of the upgrade bit and going to back to the ship selection page to be able to look at the original to make sure you got the RIGHT sticky out, wingy STUPID bit is even more annoying!!

I did briefly try my own design - what the heck goes on with the armour and shield knobs? Do they cover the whole ship or just the area you stick them on? I was putting on (what I thought were) four shield generators to cover the quadrants on my ship to be told I had run out of room on the third. Armour is surely an integral part of the hull anyway. Why not just select the type of armour/shield you want (dependent on your tech level) and it's automatically built in. Job done.

If and when I am more au fait with the game I will get around to designing all my own ships, so I will know how to rebuild with what bits and where, so it will not be as much a hassle (I hope - don't think) - but I would rather not - so I am hoping this a bug - sincerely.

I've played the Master of Orions, Star Empires etc and ship designs have always been an interesting side to the game, but never have I come across such a Heath Robinson set-up as this. Your "manual" does not even have any help in that area either - is there a ship builders/designers guide somewhere on the forums?

I agree with your comments. When your mind is set on the campaign you are playing and just want to upgrade certain ship components "Taking advantage of newly researched Techs" you dont want to be distracted with having to design a ship fom scratch. It would be very nice to be able to select the components you want upgraded and then be able to get back to the campaign at hand!

Go into the game options menu place. There is a box you can check that will leave the components in place when you go to upgrade.

As Wade said, you can change this in the Options screen, but I think it is only an option in the upcoming 1.1 version, which is currently in beta.

Oh yeah .I forgot to mention that. I'm using the beta 4. The betas can be downloaded after you download the Stardock Central site. This latest beta has many nice additions and fixes, including the leave components when upgrading option.

A "beta" is the latest work done to an upgrade/patch that will then be released as the "official" upgrade/patch.

EDIT:You can see a list of all the changes from the betas in the "Journals" section.Scroll down a little. It's good stuff. I understand it will all be in the next "official" upgrade this week,4-23-06.

If you are worried about crashes, then yes, it is best to avoid betas in general. However, the current beta appears to be very stable and I have not had a single crash over several evenings of play.

Our basic point in pointing out the beta was to tell the original poster his concern has been addressed, and if he wants to try it, how to check it out. The official release of the 1.1 patch will hopefully be this week.

Hi All,

Thanks Topcat, Wade, CTB123 and TyrGodOfWar for your replies and help.

As it so happens I had used the auto-update feature before playing, so I must have the 1.1 beta, because I found the check box you mentioned and I can now upgrade with consumate ease "sigh"

So far TyrGodOfWar I have had no hiccups with the rest of the game, the beta seems to holding up OK - anyway as CTB123 says the official 1.1 should be out soon.

Thanks again to you all, it's refreshing to see an active forum where people reply even to the most minor of comments to help out fellow gamers.
