The BIG server upgrade has arrived

The BIG server upgrade has arrived

This weekend should see some changes..

T-man and his team have been updating the backend of WinCustomize.com a lot recently.  The site is now using ASP.NET 2.0 with the goal being to make WinCustomize able to handle more users at the same time.

What inevitably has happened throughout WinCustomize's history is that the site will get fast, more people will come, which will overwhelm the system, and then the site will seem slow and buggy and such.

In late 2004, we went up with "WC2K5" which dramatically increased the # of daily visitors.  But as a result, rather than the site being slow, you'd get "server too busy" or other errors.  We've been struggling along with this for quite a long time because WinCustomize just couldn't afford the servers/personnel to deal with it.

However, much of that changed this year with the release of Galactic Civilizations II. Stardock, the company that owns WinCustomize.com also makes that game (along with Object Desktop and a lot of other good stuff). The game has been a huge hit and has allowed us to buy a bunch of high end servers.

In early March, we did some server upgrades to deal with the serious problems we were running into due to the overall Stardock.net traffic increase from the release of GalCiv II.  We even had to take WinCustomize down for several hours over the course of a few days.  But with the revenue from GalCiv II, we can finally do a serious overhaul of our back end.

As of today, the major backend coding changes are largely completed.  This weekend we're installing over half a dozen new high end servers to help power WinCustomize's growth.

Why? Because there's BIG things coming for the skinning world.  It may not have seemed that way lately right? Been a little quiet? That's because a lot of things are being worked on that you will see start to show up over the next year.  Windows Vista is coming, the Vista sidebar is coming, some really interesting new...things are coming, and WinCustomize will be supporting them all.  It's going to get very exciting very soon.

But rather have all this cool stuff happen and then have the site grind to a halt with flakey behavior, we're trying to get everything in place before hand.  By the end of next week, the full upgrades both to the server backend and the code should be in place.  At that point, the team will start to work on WC2K7 which will be a new overhaul to the front end of the site (what the site looks like, interface, features, etc.).  Good times!

Everything running great here. Communicaton is key, and I wish other companies took your lead and followed suit! Right now the big one is and has been Microsoft.

Microsoft never has been good with upgrading software or making errors understandable to the public or remediable by the community.

Internet Explorer 7 is too little too late if you asked me. Poaching developers from Firefox to develop it even. The mozilla community has always been there for me with every little question, but where was Microsoft in the years I had IE problems? Nowhere to be found.

Proofs in the pudding

How true! So fasterus, why not wait until the job's complete before making assumptions?

Most people are already reporting improvements.....and as Brad said, the major server upgrade will be happening over the weekend, so the real proof in the pudding won't be seen 'til next week.

Looking forward to the years to come with Stardock.

It will be nice to put those errors behind us.   Does get frustrating having to log in many times a day.   Can't wait till the job is complete.

going onto Win's web

What exactly is Win's web? Ever thought that your problems may be just that your problems. Seeing as you don't contribute to this site by buying a membership I don't really see that you have any room to talk. Sure, you bought some software from SD, ok go get your content somewhere else if this site is so bad! Some people (I use that term loosely) never cease to amaze me!!

Good new Brad! Here's hoping we won't have another complete day of silence from WC for a long time to come.

Wow, ok I already noticed a difference before I saw this thread. The skin update check in the WinCustomize Browser took less than a minute rather than the normal 15 minutes. It was so surprising that I knew something had to have changed. So I wasn't surprised to see this thread when I went searching. You are adding more servers over the weekend? Very nice indeed. It's looking great.

Congrats on a job well done, and I'm glad it finally came about! The page load times have never been this good as long as I cam remember.

OK...did anything get done over the weekend? Because I haven't seen any real difference. Pages are still loading slow.

YEP-!!! Just what I thought it would be. I don't see any changes here - especially in "SPEED". In fact Just getting in is if not just the same if not worse with error reports and pages that take longer to be 'done'. But you get used to it since it's been that way for "YEARS" and I doubt if you guys will ever get it right. Oh Well. What ever you spent - it wasn't enough but then it never is.

Logged in...slower 'n mud...now fast as anywhere else on the web...if that means all of you are hard at work when the speed goes up and down...you're working waay past closing-time, must be ten or eleven p.m. there! Thanks! Don't forget to take some well-earned time for y'selves

Strange....it's consistently faster here.....though the only time there's a eal lag is getting into the admin sections....and that won't affect too many, anyway....

YA - Just as I figured would happen. It's worse. To top it off, I'm dialing in at non-peak times and running well into the highest "K" anyone could get in dial-up. --- HEY Apprentice -- You've got no room to talk. After you've been around as long as I have all I can say is you have got a LOT to learn-APPRENTICE!!

...zzzzz...huh!?...what?!...are we there yet?...just took three minutes+ to load, closed IE, came back, logged in(?), voila! Here you are! A long way from ID to MI, lots of flip-flops, etc...bottom line: you admins and techs are all-over-it, so no worries here. Hang in there, 'no place like home'
