By the way, while thinking about the Nats home opener...

Just chatting with a friend that will be going to the game with me tomorrow as we try to work out what time to meet up for the game and where, I was reminded that Dick Cheney will be tossing out the first pitch for the Nats home opener and because of that, there will be increased security at the game.

I'm glad that I have the day off and will have plenty of time to get to the game. It shouldn't be a problem at all to get to the game on time and hang out at the gates until my friend gets there from his work. He's (I think) just taking the afternoon off, while I have the whole day off from my job.

Still, both of us are a little concerned. As my friend joked, is the increased security because of us, or is it because the Veep is gonna be there and a baseball might make him 'armed and dangerous'?

All I can say is that I'm glad I'm not a lawyer. Hopefully that will keep me out of his sights and avoid having me be labelled a target of opportunity for him :D

On a more serious side, hopefully he can stand to actually toss the ball 90 feet.

And even more thankfully there's more than enough foul territory at RFK stadium to mean if the Veep does opt to try using the ball to hit someone in the crowd, he'll have a lot of extra distance to cover in doing so :p

It may be for only a week, BUT - Who's on top now?  Hehehehehee

As it turned out, I missed getting to see the Veep toss out the first pitch as I was waiting in one of the still incredibly slow moving vending lines. New vendor (Aramark, versus Ogden last year), same story. Slow lines, inability to deliver food at many stations and just plain poor management of the service lines and distribution of the various types of food at the stadium.

Literally there is -- as best I can tell -- one stand in the entire upper deck that serves Nachos. Same stand that serves the 1/4 of the Papa John's square pizza to you in a box about 4" across for $7.00. Nacho's at $6.00 seemed over-priced until I saw the size of the pizza boxes.

Beer at $6.50 per, for those that indulge.

Soda's in a souvenir cup - $5.00

Bottled water - $4.00

Regular cup of soda - $3.50 (what a bargain!)

Ugh, I should probably merge this with the earlier thread on the Nats sales situation, but no worries....

Meanwhile, I'm surprised that the Clueless One isn't here crowing about the booing that Cheney supposedly received when he tossed out the first pitch.

Though I missed actually seeing it, I didn't miss hearing it any more than anyone else did. It seems that the reporters that are trying to work up that story are making a mountain out of nothingness. If he was booed, it wasn't long and it wasn't loud. I know I heard the cheers easily enough when there was a great defensive play while I was still in that damned line.

I'm sure Cheney did draw some scattered boos, and maybe even a bit of a concerted effort of boos, but it sure didn't last long.

Nice try by the MSM to help bring down the poll numbers ever so slightly more....

Sadly the Mets definitely have the Nat's number this season. I'm back tomorrow to hope for otherwise (my son and I going tomorrow, then it's break time for me for a while on the tickets for Nat's while we try to figure out where #1 son will get his College tuition from!)

Tomorrow is a Pedro Martinez day. Personally I hope he gets beaned by the Nat's starter (whomever that is, I believe it'll be Armas, Jr.) after his having plunked several Nats during their games up in NYC. Of course if he does get beaned, the Nat's would lose their manager again and the pitcher for suspensions, and of course the Nats guys would be the ones that would get suspended rather than anything happening to Pedro! {grrrrrr!!!}

Terp, I like you.  I really do.

But after the trashing I got last year, and my Mets (and it will be this year I am sure), I just have to decide to say.

hehe.

The Mets are looking pretty good for this season, at least so far. I don't expect the Nat's will do much at all, though they may influence the race later by making some trades (hard to tell for sure, if new ownership comes in and can kiss Soriano's butt hard enough, they may wind up keeping most of their team intact).

I like the Mets, I really do, but not when they are playing the Nats. I loved picking them to win the World Series in that great Buckner BoSox series I almost lost my bet at the time, but the Mets didn't wait until the next year that time

(Used to not like the Mets when they were playing the Orioles either, but until the O's change owners, I really don't care who beats up on them, except perhaps the always hated Yankees!)

Oh, I also wanted to say as a fan of the Mets, I'd be a bit leery of their pitching staff. They need Pedro to stay healthy (and he better watch the number of batters he plunks lest he get a long suspension for pitching inside too much), and some of their other members of the rotation seem a bit too green to me, but they may pull through.

Mets fans can be somewhat thankful (I wish that the Nats were taking advantage of this) that the Marlins had that fire sale. It really does give them a more clear shot at taking the division.

I figure the Mets will be right there with Atlanta, and perhaps even knock them off, depending on the injury bug affects the Braves. I didn't catch yet what the news was on Chipper Jones after that injury the other day, but that was pretty serious looking. If he goes down, they seem to have enough spare parts on their roster to replace him, but they are not the juggernaut they used to be.

Oh, one more btw Guy, the Mets and O's talk above reminds me of one of my favorite films: Frequency (Dennis Quaid, Jim Caviezel (sp)), done a few years ago. I'm betting you've seen it, but if not, definitely get it and watch it. Mets fans would really love it

You are damned and determined to make me appologize!

Ok, I am sorry.  My team is the Mets.  My other team is the Orioles.  And you are right!  Why cant you be an Orioles fan?

But hail and well met!  Actually, I am sorry for you, not for my Mets. Better luck against the damn braves!

Actually Guy (continuing the two sided conversation here heheheh), I grew up an O's fan, and I hate not to love dem O's hun, but I just can't stomach Peter Angelos as their owner. I grew tired of him several seasons back, during their last playoff run actually, when his meddling cost the O's an opportunity for Pat Gillick to make some trades that would really have helped the O's then, and well into the future.

Then the bum went and ran Davey Johnson out of town (only the manager of the year the prior season!!!), and also ran off John Miller (hall-of-fame announcer for sure, award winning many times over) and let the team ruin it's farm system completely.

If he'd sell out to someone else -- almost anyone else -- I'd love dem O's again. Until he does sell them, he has an awfully long way to go to make up for the last (approx) 10 years of running the team.

Following up a bit on the thought about the Mets chances - with the Marlins basically phoning it in all season (except for D-train Willis), the Nat's being under powered offensively and still having a very shakey pitching staff of their own, and the Phillies not really being that competitive, it would seem that the Mets are going to have to be the team to take down the Braves.

With the Braves having lost Leo Mazzone to the O's (which was a very good move by the O's I think, though several years late), their pitching staff seems more human now than ever, as evidenced by Hudson's terrible outting the other day. (I think that makes two for him already this season).

I don't necessarily hate on the Braves, but I would like to see them slide back down for a while. They have been pretty good for a long time running. Time for somene else to take that crown.

This was funny, terpfan. Particularly this:

As my friend joked, is the increased security because of us, or is it because the Veep is gonna be there and a baseball might make him 'armed and dangerous'?
