KeepSafe released!

Stardock's new must-have utility!

Plymouth, MI - (April 10, 2006) – Stardock Corporation, a leading software application company, announced KeepSafe today. KeepSafe is a revolutionary new utility that combines data backup and revisioning into one simple program. Based on user-defined backup locations and settings, KeepSafe becomes a seamless component of the Windows XP operating system. It is available for $29.95 on www.stardock.com.

Once installed, KeepSafe can be configured to protect user-chosen file types (i.e. -- .doc., .pst, .xls, etc.) or entire directories (i.e. -- "My Documents"). From then on, any time a user works on one of those files and saves their changes; KeepSafe will automatically store a revision to a user-defined location, typically a server, locally, or external drive. The archiving feature allows users to store multiple versions of each document based on the user’s preference. If a key data file gets corrupted, the user can right-click on that file and choose to return to an earlier version, minimizing the lost time and effort. KeepSafe is the intermediate step needed to secure data between backups.

Brad Wardell, CEO and president of Stardock said, "This product works without the user even realizing it’s working. It’s that seamless. Users, once they’ve customized their setting definitions won’t have to remember to backup their important files anymore. KeepSafe will do it automatically without hot keys or hot buttons to worry about."

Another key aspect of KeepSafe is that it builds an on-the-fly database of everything it is protecting. As a result, users can quickly find versions of any document they've ever worked on quickly. If you've ever had to search your hard drive to find something you recently worked on or use a "desktop search" program to find your documents, KeepSafe is for you.

KeepSafe makes it easy to choose which types of files and which directories you want to "keep safe" It has a ton of configuration options to give the user total control over how many revisions of a file should be kept, where they should be stored, etc. KeepSafe integrates into the shell making it easy to recover a lost, deleted, corrupted or just older version of a protect file. KeepSafe keeps all your work in a database. Any protected file becomes incredibly easy to find. Can't remember where that document from last month you wrote is? No problem, KeepSafe remembers. Just start typing in the name of the file and KeepSafe will filter in matching names as you type.

The Keepsafe beta has saved my butt a time or two already. It's the fire and forget of file level backups! I'm glad it's out of QA!

Now lets roll on ThinkSync and Multiplicity (for Linux and MAC).

Secure process looks interesting too. I'm just not sure who the target market is for that.

Errrr.... how about doing some work on the DesktopX package for once? I keep seeing all these new programmes coming out and masses of Stardock resources spent on new products but I have bought and paid for the desktopX package, many of which's components are in serious need of an overhaul at the very least.

Sorry but getting a bit fed up of this. Its always 'oh yes we are working on it but we have been putting all our resources into something else lately'. Sorry but I'm getting a bit fed up.

Do you mean Object Desktop, not DesktopX?

Which components are you interested in seeing updates for?  If you do not have show betas enabled then you may want to turn it on so you can see the current developments.

What about ObjectDock?

ObjectDock 1.3 beta should be up this week.

Kin242, what are you talking about? We've been doing Object Desktop updates like crazy.  We also have a DesktopX 3.2 beta in development but we're still working on it.

So, with each revision save, does it savethe whole file? or just the "changed bits" from the previous save ? (like differential backups at the file level).
Currently it saves the entire file. We do have diff based support in KS, but it was disabled for 1.0 as we felt that although no problems had come up in testing, we would rather test that functionality further. So its likely to show up in an update and when diff mode is enabled in that version it will process all the old revisions on your HD too, so saving you space.

I reported eariler that I could not back up files in certain folders in the current user's folders. For instance, I tried to backup bookmark.html in my firefox profile, but I was unable to. Is this possible now in version 1? Or is it simply not possible because of OS restrictions? (I'm back home on my parents computer so I do not have access to KeepSafe 1.0 at the moment.)

Anyways, Good work with KeepSafe. It's one of my top favorite utilities, if not THE one. And I'm looking forward to DesktopX 3.2 and ObjectDock 1.3.

How come it doesn't compress the saved files?

I use XP folder compression. Works the same, controlled by me, no need to add a zip app to the mix.

Compressing Files or Folders on NTFS Volume
To compress a file or folder:
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. Double-click the NTFS Volume that contains the folder or folders you want to compress.
3. Right-click the file or folder you want to compress, and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click Advanced.
5. Click to select the Compress contents to save disk space check box, and then click OK.
6. In the Properties dialog box, click OK.
7. In Confirm Attribute Changes, click the option you want.
NOTE: If you move or copy a file into a compressed folder, it is compressed automatically. If you move a file from a different NTFS Volume into a compressed folder, it is also compressed. However, if you move a file from the same NTFS Volume into a compressed folder, the file retains its original state, either compressed or uncompressed.

Displaying Compressed Files in Color
You can change the display of files and folders that are compressed in Windows Explorer and My Computer, so it is easy to see them. To display compressed files in color:
1. Double-click Folder Options in Control Panel.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
4. On the View tab, click to select the Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color check box.

Speed and that the OS itself supports compressing of folders.

a couple of questions:

Is it supposed to appear in SC under "Thinkdesk" tab or we have to use the link posted at the top of this page?

Once installed, will SC show any update/beta of Keepsafe?

Thx in advance.

Weird, I don't. Were you a beta tester?

I'm just wondering, if one has a program like Acronic True Image, would this program still be able to have it's uses/benefits?

If so, I may just give it a try.

Yes, I've used it since the middle of last year....[beta] ...and yet still have weekly Drive-Images with DI7.

They really are for two different levels of 'protection'/backup....

I'd hardly want to go through the dramas of an image restore for some lost doc wording...
