Celestia...A Neat 3D Space Viewing Proggy

with search and goto facilities

Hi y'all, for those of you with a fascination for space and what's out there, I just found this neat proggy called Celestia, which takes you on a tour of our solar system and known space....if your intereseted, click http://www.majorgeeks.com/Celestia_d5030.html. Haven't had a chance to explore it properly as yet, but it sure looks like a way cool proggy.....but at 14mb it might be a bit of a D/L for those still on dial up, though well worth it, IMHO

No need for 'Beam us up Scotty' with this baby

I've had this some time. It's fascinating to goto a star and see what the sky looks like from there. It's just like being out there

Hi Starkers! The link isn't working for me either.

Link

I've got it too. Does make my CPU run at about 100%, though. That's what SpeedFan is for, so I don't get all jittery about rising CPU temps.

Sorry about the link not working, folks....copied and pasted as normal so I don't understand why not

Anyhow, many thanks to Majic7 for providing a working one

Yeah, I just checked my CPU usage and it was peaking around 90% -100%....hopefully there's info on the site to help resolve this, and if not, maybe a forum post could shed some light on it. Haven't had much of a chance to check it all out properly as yet, but will put on my soon to do list....I noticed there's add-ons and workarounds to investigate. Here's the http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ again....to be sure, to be sure

I've had this for a while also, but then I discovered XPlanet: http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/ which is not at all the same thing, but it's got me hooked!

It's a 'live' wallpaper of the heavenly body of your choice (astronomical, that is )

I'm currently viewing Earth from latitude 0, longitude -153 at some altitude (? several '000 kms) i.e above Sydney Australia, and every 5 min it updates so I can watch the terminator move round the earth during the day. It's also possible to download daily sattelite cloud maps that can be overlaid so I've also been watching the progress of Larry, Watti (sp?) & Glenda...

Since it's from the *nix world it's not all that friendly to setup, but still not that hard.
