The Game itself

GalCiv I was better

Two weeks ago i read a preview about Gal Civ II and was interessted in it.
Therefore i bought Gal Civ I, and i liked it. It was easy to play and the "only one turn more and they and will go sleeping feeling" was there , as i ever had it by playing master of orion II
Today my GV II Game arrived, and i was bruning to play this game.
After starting the game there was no sound in the intro, hrr no prob, the game is the only important thing.
But as is begun palying the game, i did not know what to do, i had many problems to realize what to do, although i watched the tutorials, helps and read the handbook.
The Research Tree is balanced good, but has a too complicated menu, as many other menus in the game.

As a owner of a German Version, i realized many translation mistakes and many files are only in english (and that in a german version???)
I am really afraid about this game, and think that you are making the same mistakes as the developer of master of orion III
If i buy such am game, i want to have fun while playing the game, not to read tons of text and runing blind into the unexpected game

Sry but when you dont change many things in the game, i will play the old game and waiting for a better part III

My 2 cents
with best regards from the cold germany

Sorry you had such problems. I don't own the German version but sounds like English verion plays lots better As far as no soudn that could be because fo your regional language settigns. I know there was an issue in the US verion that if you didnt set your PC to US english, you didn't see soem textures. But honestly I don't know. Just want to let you know I'm in love with this game 1000X more so than with galciv1.

@Astax: The problem isn't the game itself, the problem is getting it to work.
Think about you bought a game, you install it and then you have to switch over your windowssettings, have to install several megabyte of patches (supposing you could even patch), how would you feel?

Lets compare: You buy a car.
After the car is delivered to you, there is no gasoline, you have to call someone to bring some to you, because you cannot drive. After this you notice the wheels are ... there are only 3 of them (no it's no Ferrari!!) and then you notice the color of your car is yellow, like ordered, but the backdoors are in red (German game, english tutorials). Would you be pleased with this car?
The car itself could be great, but the other things don't match.

there are numerous posts, and a sticky about this. Paradox were supposed to translate it and ship the game as 1.0x, both of which they failed to do properly. Forgboy said that they were translating 1.0x to fix it, as he thought that that was the current german version, but many people show proof its the original game. Players from Germany are working on the file translations right now.

I tried posting in German, but I'm out of practice and screwed up repeatedly. Babelfish laughed at me

It's something that is becoming more and more common in the gaming industry in particular - publishers put huge pressure on developers to deliver by a certain date, so the developers deliver a game that is buggy as hell. This is the curse of the internet for we gamers (and also a curse for we developers...)

But it's a double-edged sword - or, at least, it is in some cases. Whilst gamers now expect games to require patching (we shouldn't have to, but we do; in my case, 'expecting' to have to patch a game usually means waiting until it has been dropped to bargain prices before buying it! ), at least some devs make up for this by adding new content to the game after it is released, for free. I fear it's an exception rather than a rule, but I'm getting the impressions from these forums that Stardock are quite good in that respect

The other problem for non-English-speaking people is that software piracy has placed more and more pressure on publishers and developers to release games internationally at the same time, rather than staggering launches as used to be the practice. Before, developers could release a game in, say, the US, and then fix the bugs before their scheduled European release. But now, it is deemed necessary to release German, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Korean and Welsh ( ) versions at the same time - which means that they each need to have the bugs in them fixed! (This is actually a good thing for English-speaking non-US folks like myself, as this means we get access to the game earlier than we used to a few years ago, without having to worry about translation problems! )

I'm not saying you shouldn't be angry about buying a game that doesn't work out of the box (I've complained enough myself, in this case and in the past!) In fact, I would encourage you to act upon it. But when you eventually work past the problems, it's one hell of a game, and I think Stardock deserve a lot of credit for that.

Also, Stardock have deliberately gone for some gameplay mechanics that ARE different to other game out there. Some things that look like bugs to a lot of people are genuine features. Whilst Stardock needs a much better manual and clearer tutorials, it's good to see that they are not catering for the lowest common denominator. It is just a shame that their documentation lets them down, with so many would-be fans getting frustrated because the mechanics are not explained well enough.

Stardock had little to do with the German version.  The only difference are the translated files and Paradox was in charge of that.
