This Evening

With palms together,
An evening at the Zen Center spent in Zazen was very wonderful. A gentle person came to sit with us this evening. She is a peace activist who also is an art teacher, a mother, and a wife. She has organized a weekly peace vigil on a street corner by the federal building in the town in which we live. I sit at the peace vigil weekly with her. I bring my cushion, sit half lotus, hands in the cosmic mudra, with a small block lettered sign that simply says, "PEACE.". I rarely speak to anyone, so I was delighted when she attended this evening. Peace is such a challenge. Everyone seems to quick to anger and violence anymore. so, we sat our two practice periods and then we served tea and I gave a short teisho. Good things happen when we sit still. Good things. So, heres the thing: stop doing bad stuff, do good stuff, and bring about good for all things. Be well.

I looked up the definition of the word peace. In parenthesis was a complete summarization of the definition. Harmonious relationship. It is impossible to be peaceful to one another when we are not at peace within ourselves. Once we are at peace with ourself it is easy to be peaceful. The chaos of the world seems to fall into place.

Sodaiho would you agree?

Hello Adventure-Dude, Yes, I would agree with this statement. Peace is interactive. It does not occur in a vacuum. We must be more than peace, though. We must be generous, loving, and wise. These are most challenging. Our practice isto become these without an "I" as a referent. So, heres the thing, when we let go of our 'self' and allow whatever is there to teach us, then there becomes no real difference between teacher and student, subject and object, out or in. This is true peace.Be well.
