Altarans surrender to Drengi? What the...

In my current game, the Altarians surrendered without a single one of their cities taken, to the Drengi! The even called me up and told me about it, just to spite me. I am a little confused though, because both the Terrans and the other neutral civilization where both left at this point, why did they go with the Drengi? Arn't those two opposite alignments?

What level are you playing at (it matters). Did the Altarian have good relations with you? Did you have a stronger military?

All important factors.

One could rationalize ti as that the Altarians didn't wish to fight you and so made themseelves a vassal race or somesuch to the Drengin Empire.

However, gamewise, it's likely you were so overwhelmingly militarized they surrendered before the war even really started.

Well, basically, I invaded their territory with 2 fleets of 4 medium ships, took out their starbases and then attacked a huge pile of their medium ships that were just sitting there. They had about 18 of them to start, but since I had 2 fleets with 9 moves each I attacked and killed all of their medium ships one by one. The next turn I killed all of their units in orbit around their home planet, and in the following turns did the same to the ones around their other 4 planets. I lost a troup transport with 3000 soliders against their homeworld, knocking it down to less than a billion people, the next transport was moving into range when they surrendered. I understand the surrender, just not who they surrendered to.

They usually won't surrender to you because they hate you

I think (just guessing) that they usually surrender to the most powerful race that they're not at war with, in the hopes that said race will use their new resources to destroy all those other races.
