It has to do with the GalCiv2 community scorecard, the Metaverse. In addition to the individual score rankings, people can join together and pool their scores into groups called Empires on another list. It's all about more bragging rights. Plus some Empires are full separate GalCiv-friendly communities with websites and forums and everything.

Nah, you're not a bonehead. I don't think I've ever come across a company-run thing like the Metaverse before, so it's a fairly new concept to me as well.

Then again, I have to admit I'm not ordinarily a strategy gamer so I don't know if this sort of scorecard idea is common. I generally play adventure games. *sheepish look*

No sheepish look needed - heck, the Metaverse is sorta RPG-like. It's one of the ways we lure people in to strat gaming You know, Civ 4 lets you role-play as famous historical leaders (hint hint)...

Also, the metaverse type of thing is in a couple of other games, like the Starfleet Command series. Great fun!

TinPlated: I do also like RPGs (adventure games aren't quite the same thing, but that's another topic). One of the things that made me like the GalCiv series is the great atmosphere and background stuff. The fact that it's sci-fi doesn't hurt either (not a lot of SF games out there, relatively speaking).

I have played both Civ 1 and Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire and liked both a great deal, but I've never really had time to delve into strategy games that much outside of those until I discovered GalCiv a couple months ago.

So, I guess it's a testament to the GalCiv series that it can suck in even people who aren't usually strategy gamers.
