Minor Issue: Intentional or Big?

For the Korx, they get Ion Drive as a starting tech, but not New Propulsion Techniques, which is the prereq for it. Is this an oversight, or intentional?

I'm pretty sure that its intentional. A fair number of other default races start with ion drive while lacking new propulsion techniques. Not to mention that you can trade for techs that you don't have the prereq for. The only things you need to have the prereq of a tech for in my experince is to research an tech the old fashion way, or to get it as one of your starting techs when you create a custom race.

Yeah, off the top of my head, the Drath start with Ion drive as well.

As Linthar said, you'll notice if you trade for a tech that's a couple slots down the line from what you currently possess, you can then start your research from that point.
For example, if you start with just regular hyperdrive, and trade for Impulse drives, you can immediately begin researching impulse drive mk. II without having to research ion drives first.

It works the same with techs you get from trade. You can not have researched any laser, get Plasma and go on from there. It's a bit more tricky with techs other than weapons since you don't get improvements retroactively so getting something far ahead doesn't mean you're equal to someone who has researched everything in between.

Various races start with differing techs, depending on what their individual histories are. This is intentional, although it does occasionally violate the tech tree.

korx get the ion drive when they start.. even though human were the one that made hyperdrive possible..

would have been nice if human had the speed advantage to make up for the lack of stellar cartography.. oh well
