Where can I get Missiles, Guns and appropriate Armor?

Sorry, but when I examine the tech tree, after researching Space Weapons, I can see a whole bunch of Beam stuff to get, and likewise Armor which helps shield against that, but nowhere a mention of the other types of weaponry and armory. (Or is this an anomoly of the campaign?)

This is part of the campaign. In the begining at least it doesn't let you research certain tech branches. If you play a custom game you should see that all the missing techonlogy is available for research.
