Planet tiles

Hi,

can anybody explain how the planetary tile map works? Green means supports project, yellow needs soil enhancement, orange needs habitats.
What is the total number of available fields depend on? Size of the planet? Or it's class?
What do I have to build to get more tiles available (besides the yellow and orange ones)?

Planet Quality determines the number of initial green tiles. Yellow, orange, and red (improvable with terraforming) I think are entirely random. Improving them to green tiles improves the quality of the planet. If you have the +% to planet quality racial ability, any planet you colonize will automatically get a boost to planet quality and a corresponding increase in initial green tiles.

I'm not sure if there are any other ways to improve planet quality.

Manual, page 28. Basically, class determines the number of tile, but Planet Quality can give you a boost.

If I remember correct if you have the racial ability of +20% planet quality all the planets will read normally (class 10) but when you settle on one it would then read class 12 with 12 workable tiles initially.

I really wish I could see yellow / orange / red tiles without actually settling & researching the requisite techs first.

You can, but it requires clicking on each tile and seeing if it says "X technology needed for improvement".
