Friday Status Report

Where things stand!

Wow. I mean. WOW!

What a first few days it's been.  We are very glad people like the game. It's one of those things you can never know until it's "out there".

Retail Stuff

Ah retail.  A couple weeks ago there were a lot of people who pre-ordered the digital download-only option who were upset that we were making them wait to get the game until the game was at retail.  So we took a bit of a pounding for that.  But after having taken a beating for that, as fate would have it, that is exactly what happened -- we released the digital download on February 21st as planned but general retail available remained very sketchy for an additional two days (and it's still sketchy in a number of retailers). As a result, we were able to tick off both digital downloaders and people who pre-ordered at retail.  It took some skill and hard work to manage to not have your cake or eat it but we did it. ;)

Then there's the whole Collector's Edition fun. We were told that all pre-orders, regardless of source, in North America, would have their orders fulfilled with the Collector's Edition box. We passed this on. Naturally, only some stores are doing that. Oh, it gets better, some stores are doing it part-way. That is, they provide the technology tree poster but not the box. Oye.  So here's the thing -- anyone who pre-ordered from a retailer in North America and ended up with the regular package who wants the Tech tree poster, email us ([email protected]) and we'll mail you a tech tree poster (as we get them in) for free.  It doesn't really matter whose fault it is, at the end of the day, you bought our game and it's up to us to make sure you're happy.

Game Stuff

Luckily, the game itself has gone very well. When you spend 2 years making a game, you can never be sure how it will be received. Plus, you always worry that there's some huge bug or compatibility issue that will sneak out.  That isn't to say that the game is perfect. Nothing's more annoying (at least to me) than some developer saying how everything is perfect or saying "well it works fine on my machine". When you sell a game, it doesn't matter how well it works on the developer's machine, it matters how well it works on your machine.  So we've been living on the forums, writing down what problems people have and we expect to release our first update today.

Also, since widespread retail availability is going to be more graduated than we had expected, some people may not get their boxed game until mid next week. Apparently it's at Best Buy, Walmart (but selling out quickly at both), and a few other places but it's in various levels of quantity.  I've been assured that they're getting them out there as "fast as possible".

We're planning to do a v1.0X build next Thursday. We don't know what's going to be in that build yet.  What we want to do is have some nice little game play tweaks and other minor changes so that people who bought it at the store and had to wait to do it have something to look forward to.  So if you already have the game, you can go onto this thread and post your ideas.

Post Release Updates

Stardock's been making software for digital distribution for some years now.  Those of you with Object Desktop already know that we tend to update our software very often. To us, that's the whole point of digital delivery.  But in the game world, it's actually considered a negative to keep releasing updates because apparently most games only release updates to fix bugs.  Our updates will include bug fixes to be sure. But that's not what they're for.  They're to provide new features to our software based on user feedback to reward people for buying our software.  In essence, free updates ARE our copy protection.  Or more to the point, we don't need copy protection because we provide (or try to) a greater incentive for people to buy the product by giving them free updates.  Moreover, free updates helps keep people playing which helps word of mouth.  Word of mouth is what makes or breaks PC games.  So our view is that providing a stream of free updates is just good business.

Players should not feel they need to download the updates.  Many Object Desktop users will only download updates every few months. Others will update every month.  And some grab every update we make.  It's all up to you.  We plan to keep releasing updates to this game for a long time. So don't feel like you have to get these updates if you don't want.

We'll keep you posted on how things are going. Feel free to comment here or on the forums and we'll try to answer your questions.  One thing though: Please make sure you read the stickies or the Readme in the game if you run into some issue. ;)

"it's at Best Buy, Walmart (but selling out quickly at both)"

Good for you, Stardock! That's the sure sign that the good word is getting out, and it's got a bigger voice than the bad word. If it weren't so cold, and so far, I'd come over there and give you all a hug.

Now, go be with your families for a weekend. GalCiv 2 will still be here Monday morning!

thanks for the hard work and rapid response, this degree of user support is something that I have not yet seen in the software industry.

keep up the hard work and if you guys want to go public, I'll got some friends in I-Banking that can help you out, j/k.

I'd be interested to see first-week sales numbers when you have them.

Not such great support here, I've sent email and posted about not being able to register my retail copy, no replies.

I would like to say that I have actually convinced one of my friends to go out and buy this game. Now, that may not sound like much but he is knee deep into "warez" and hasn't actually paid for any software in years. Good job Stardock.

Sheesh. After two years of work on a game, it's still great to see the amount of devotion you have to your fans. I downladed the digital version, mainly becasue I'm impatient and also that I knew that you all up there at Stardock would see every cent. You guy's earned it. To be honest, I was not expecting the amont of quality that you put into this game. Obviously, I was wrong. Being at college, I'm usually pretty tight on cash, but I made a special exception for this game even though I had my doubts. Now, whenever I see product and the developer is Stardock, I associate quality with it.

Bravo you guys, bravo. I would just wish that all game developers would devote themselves so passionately into their work. You have definitley set the bar.

And yet I've talked to (yes talked to... well chatted with... but it was over IRC so it's kinda like talking) with a GalCiv2 DEVELOPER and emailed them personally my problem with my save game and they took the time to load it up and figure out my problem (and from what I've been told, the fix is in the patch that is being released today). I DARE you to find another game company that will interface with the community on this level. Stardock has certainly won over a loyal customer for life here.

I'm sure your serial problem will be resolved shortly. Patients... trust me.... this game is MORE than worth waiting for.

Will those of us that cancelled preorders and downloaded be able to aquire those tech trees? I have had GC2 on order through Gamestop for months but refuse to wait until their estimated ship date of 27 Feb to play. So Ive purchased it and am now D/L. Will you send the tech tree to us impatient souls?

I was wondering: How many copies did you wind up selling? How many did you need to sell to turn a reasonable profit on the game?

Hey Brad,

I'm coming relatively late in the game; first played GalCiv about eight months ago and loved it. (yep, I'm slow) GalCiv 2 is, so far, THE game of the decade for me. I really think I need to update the security in my house because somebody at Stardock broke in and stole my wishlist of everything I could ever want in a 4x.

On a more serious note, you're well on your way to making a customer for life. I've lurked on these boards for a while now and am very gratified to see that gold old-fashioned customer service isn't completely dead in entertainment software these days.

Bravo Zulu

(and don't forget: the reward for a job well done is more to be done)

I just got back from Fred Meyer's, about a 20 min drive, and they had it but are now out. So i'll check again after work tomarrow. If they still don't have it then i'll have no choice but to drive to EB games, Gamestop, Fry's, Best Buy, or Circuit City on Sunday, about an 1 and half hours drive but i am sure it will be worth it. Luckily all those stores are in close proximity to each other in the same city.

This is my first post here, so I hope I'm not out of line, but...any idea when a demo will be available? I really like to try games before I buy them, and I'd just like to confirm that I really want to get this one (although it's almost certain - I played dozens of games of the GC1 demo since I found it around early January and decided to wait for the sequel to buy).

That said, it's nice to see that things are going so well, and that someone operating mostly over the Internet can really get noticed. =^.^=

I just figured something out!

None of this is real. The reason that nobody can find the game in retail is that it doesn't exist. This is a giant hoax played on the ignorant masses. Brad created all of the posts about the game to boost pre-order sales, and now he plans to flee the country (or the world).

Brad, Let me know when you open an office in Sacramento (I can hope). I am a .NET programmer and would love to work for you.

Just got off the phone with EB, (after 4 attempts today waiting on hold for 20 minutes at a time before I hung up. Too bad GameStop took over.) and was told that in their system they do not have a listing for a Regular Edition and a Collectors Edition. The person told me it was likely the Red Box version that shipped.

I have to wait until next week now for it to arrive, but I would like to know where did all the CE Boxes go if they did not end up at the proper destinations?

Too bad that this seems to be the way everything had to work it self out.
well, my online preorder from EB is still on hold, but I hope it comes soon. I will wait, a few more days won't hurt, though I am itching to play. Hope it's the CE box, but hey, if not, I know you guys will take care of the problem, you always have before. Being and independent developer has to be rough, and I for one and more than happy to cut you a break on this. Plenty of time to enjoy the game when it does get here.

Sorry to hear that the retailers are causing so much grief for Stardock and the GalCiv2 fans! Maybe, after seeing strong sales of GalCiv2, the retailers will be easier to deal with for your next game release.

Tomarrow (Sunday) i'm heading to all the stores i know of to see if i can find this game. THE CRUSADE FOR GALCIV2 WILL COMMENCE ON THE 26th.

I pre-ordered my copy at the local brick-and-mortar store of a large retailer (let's call them "EBG"), only to have it arrive six days late, and in non-collectable trim. It was a bit of a letdown, but after reading other people's experiences with the aforementioned retailer, I wasn't that surprised.

Anyways, kudos to you folks for offering to send out the tech trees via mail to make up for the errors of others!
