STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

STICKY: EASY TWEAKS to make the game better for you

Let us know

This is a sticky thread for people to request very simple tweaks -- things that could be put in and tested in less than an hour that you think would make the game more fun.

So suggestions like "We want a full blown encyclopedia" or "Can we have tactical combat?" should NOT go here.  These are things that should be very easy to do.

The goal is to come up with a list of little things we can do to put into a Thursday update so that people who had to wait to get the game at retail will be able to have something to look forward to to make it worth the wait.

Add the ability to raze economic, political, and other capitals on conquered worlds, as well as any other "one per race" type structures.

Manipulating ships at planets is cumbersome, most especially if you've just moved a fleet there and wish to move it off again.

SUGGEST: Keeping ships that were part of a fleet as they entered orbit "together", and highlighting them in a colored box. If the player wishes to eject such ships, they may use the existing "launch ship" button, OR a newly created "launch fleet" button which would launch all ships of that fleet, and keep them in a fleet once launched.

Further, it would be nice if rightclicking ships in orbit, or within fleets, brought up a small menu of options for the most common things you'd want to do: ie, launch, upgrade, remove from fleet, etc.

As it stands, it's just too darn cumbersome... though perhaps I'm beating a dead horse

Scroll rate should be respective of your screen size, and should not change respective to screen size when you zoom in or out:

Example, it *appears to me* that when you zoom way in, let's say, on a ship, and move the cursor to the edge of the screen, the scrolling will jump quickly away from the ship. When you zoom way out, to the galactic view, it *appears* to scroll very slowly.

This is quite counterintuitive, and leads to many players feeling that side scrolling is "too slow".

I suggest that the scroll rate should always move objects across the screen at the same rate, regardless of zoom level. Thus, if it takes 3 seconds for a planet to scroll from the left side of the screen to the right in galaxy view, it would also take 3 seconds for the ships thrusters to scroll from the left side of the screen to the right when you're zoomed in fully.

At the very least, make this an option under the interface tab.

If I may add my own suggestions - forgive if I repeat others.

1. I'm playing a game on a huge map on challenging difficulty where only one of the eight AI empires are expanding into other planets, please rectify this.

2. Be able to upgrade ships regardless if they are in a stack or fleet.

3. Be able to Queue ship building in a planet.

4. Show the area of effect of a station when a constructor is selected.

5. To be able to move the mini map center when it's zoomed in, or at least have it reflect the current position of the game screen.

6. To be able to set a class designation that changes per upgrade. It can be any orientation of characters, the important thing is when a ship is upgraded it's class designation changes to the class designation of the new design. So maybe make it a separate text box in the ship creation panel [Class Designation], [Class Name]. That way, a player could elect to use that feature if he wants. Also, if a player uses this proposed feature, it's not modifiable in the ship change name dialog box (or it could be, but it woudl be easier if it wasn't).

7. In lieu to the previous suggestion, have when a ship is created, it reads from a text file to give each ship a specfic name, by ship size and class. So each ship has it's own name.

8. Be able to rename stars

1) Galaxy Setup
i) If not replace, at least add the option of drop down box for habitable planets, number of planets, and other settings. It makes it easier to see at a glance what choices the player have and make a choice.
ii) Add the option of how often random events occur, build rate.
iii) Besides the current set up of game difficulty and AI intelligence.
You might break it down into categories like
AI starting fund
Player starting fund
AI penalty (economic)
AI intelligence (algorithm enabled)

2) Improvements
i)Instead of ordering improvements alphabetically. List the crucial and basic improvements on the top in the same order. For example, if basic factory is the first item on the list, it will still be the first item on the list after Xeno Factory Construction is discovered. This way, we wouldn't have to go up and down the list to hunt for the improvement we want to build or have to know all the improvement name by heart.

ii) A even better (but more lengthy way) would be to allow the player to have the option of building the basic improvement even when the new version is available. The player would still have the option to purchase the new version if he/she so desires.
Building a basic factory first and then upgrading to a xeno factory will be faster then buliding xenofactory by itself.
Furthermore, the player can plan out what the planet would have and let governor take care of the rest.

I would prefer the order below for game play reasons but others might not agree.

Basic Factory (usually the first thing I build)
Basic Lab
Market Center
Basic Farming
Entertainment Network (entertainment is right after farming because they usually go together, at least in the game now)
Embassy
Starport
(other improvements like orbital fleet manager)
(super projects)

then for the second idea
Basic Factory will be followed by a tab that will show Xeno Factory Construction and another tab that will show the next appropriate upgrade.

Basic Factory (tab) (tab)

3)Governors
i) build the improvement that will finish first
ii) build soil enhacement only if no other upgrades are available. Immediately bumped off the list when new upgades are made available.

I read through but didn't spot this, sorry if its been said.

Would it be possible to get a bigger map size?

Even on the biggest with all races things are bit squashed.

Holy Crap this is an amazing game!

K ... found a few more things

1) When you are building a structure on a planet, every time you make a selection, the item menu refreshes back to the top of the list, so if you are building xeno farms and you want to select three in a row you select, scroll, scroll, select, scroll, scroll ... its kind of annoying. I believe the same is true of the actual queue as well when you want to remove things. Both lists should not refresh

2) It would be really handy if there was some way in the planet listing (the one selected by the planet tab) if it showed you which planets were focusing on something and one. As it is, you have to keep track mentally. The reason why its important is if you got brand new factories, then you want your factory planets to stop focusing on cranking out ships and to start focusing on building factories.

3) The rally point scroll menu doesn't actually work if you have enough rally points to fill the page. You have to use the scroll button. I know ... its a little thing.

4) How come your relations with another race don't improve if you happen to be fighting the same enemy? I can't imagine the British and the Americans even being on speaking terms with Stalin if they weren't fighting the Nazis

5) If you don't clean out those little blue "message boxes" that announce ships, once the entire screen is fill there is a weird little bug where a blue box zips UP the screen. Seems to happen every turn or so, but doesn't really do anything.

6) I think there might be something wrong with the rally points. I told all my ships that were going to one rally point to go to another (using that very cool utility). Suddenly all the ships lost their autopilot status. It only happened once though.

7) It would be nice if there was a little sound when the turn button turned green. Sometimes I keep clicking on the same ship not realizing that the turn has ended.

8) It would be very handy if there was a mouse over text that showed the research cost of each of the techs in the diplomacy screen. As it is it is very confusing ... is Advanced Logistics better than Expert Logistics? Am I getting ripped off in this deal?

That's all I can think of now ... now back to razing planets!

1. Are the relations given under race reports the ONLY factors used? Because the AI doesn't seem to behave as it says they should (eg, WARM race demanding tribute, etc)

2. Waypoints use cartesian coordinates, and yet I can't find the coordinates listed ANYWHERE for planets, ships, etc that I have selected on the galaxy view. They should be, they REALLY should be.

3. Further, with waypoints, it seems too bloody hard to find them, delete them, rename them. Tweaking this so that they can be clicked on just as a ship / planet can would be great.

4. Sensor range seems to be buggy on my starbases. Sometimes the viewing area that I just had clear will go cloudy, until I specifically click on the base again, at which point it "opens its eyes".

An option to change rally points in the colony list screens (One, the ship/colony screen that appears on the left side of your screen, the other, the colony list that is in the graphs menu).

Similarly, more detailed control of ships in the left-side ship/planet display menu would be nice - minibuttons for upgrade, fleet-create, move (really move, not just to here), destroy, etc. would be nice

my two main wishes have been covered above, namely:

- random selection of opponent races in non-campaign games
- easy deletion of previous user-created ship designs

I'd also like to be able to play a diplomacy-free game (with no diplomacy options for me or my AI opponents)

This may already exist, and I am simply unaware of it, but is there a way to restore the default abilities of the various Races. I have tweaked a bunch of them, but I can't recall the default settings.

Perhaps a button that restores all defaults or simply having the default Races saved in the Custom Race folder would be nice.

Cheers.

Possibility to turn off tech trade.

In the foreign deplomacy window under "treaties" have the ability to click on the empire icons and select them as the current empire. Just an ease-of-use thing.

A slightly annoying thing: the Turn button is too close to the mini-map. I've only played one game, which was on a small galaxy, and I had a starbase which a sector away from everywhere else, but right next to the Turn button on the mini-map. I frequently ended up hitting the turn button instead of moving the view. In fact, while the turn button appears to be a rectangle with a corner cut off by the mini-map, it seemed to me that it's clickable area is a rectangle that actually overlaps the mini-map. The end of the pointer certainly was on the mini-map, anyway. Which I guess makes this a minor bug. I realise this is a tiny-trivial thing which is only a problem if that bit of the miny map is important, but it is very frustrating when you lose multiple turns to it!

And yes, diagonal scrolling and cursor key scrolling would be extremely welcome.

I would like to see next previous planet and shipyard tied to either left right arrows or page up page down or something like that.

Ability to create ship templates would be nice also, we can do it on our own by designing emty hulls but it requires files moved copied out of game. And while you are at it haqrd coded design upgrades...

If you save. quit and load a game, all ship designs that you have obsoleted or deleted comes back to haunt you in quick build screen on galaxy map. Pls fix it...

Ability to see area of effet for a srabase when you are about to build it by a constructor would be nice. Having to count those grid squares is annoying, yeah i am a perfectionist...

A starbase management screen just like colony would be nice where you can see current defensive/offensive/other stats how many more constructors are needed and the ability to send constructors there would be splendid.

Now with a wish list like that i better start being very very good and wait for Santa, unless that poxy drengin fleet intercepts him first.

Addendum:

Some kind of visual marker like a big exclamation mark next to ship/fleets of races i am at war with and a BIGGER one for their troop transports.

I dunno if this counts as a tweak or a full blown feature...but..

Allow players making a custom race to choose the template for the offical races. So, I could make a race and give them the Drengin abilities and such. I know this is possible by selecting that race and changing their name/appearance etc..etc.. but id like the option to have their abilities, but still play against them .

Just got the game, great fun.

My suggestions for a (hopefully) quick set of tweaks.

'Default' settings for the various map sizes. Yes, I know you can easilly switch between the different individual settings, but I like to 'play' with them and I'd like to know what the designers consider the 'norm' for each size map.

The ability to copy core ships into the designer so we dont need to start from scratch when updating them.

A 'Replace' key on the designer for when we do update ships. We can remove and then add it, but when you get some bigger ships it can take a while to scroll through the list of components.

Possibly a 'sort component' feature on the ship designer so all components of a certain type are grouped together.

A 'value' next to objects on the trade window. This would make it easier to judge diplomatic trades.

Don't know if this is in there, cause i admit i didn't read all that, but it would be nice when you create an upgraded ship design and it brings you to the upgrade menu, you could select upgrade all (including ships in fleets and in planetary orbit).

When clicking a ship destination a long ways away, it would be nice if the destination icon would show the number of turns that ship will take to get there.

Diagonal map scrolling.

Map scrolling speed when the map is scrolled out is too slow.

Some mini-map zoom modes do not show the complete 'ownership' when playing at 1024x resolution.

Some random events (xenophobia and recession) always seem to last only 1 turn.

Need some way to see what random events are in effect. (could be a Mendel-education issue, though)

Need an easy way to sync main view and mini-map.

Two things:
1: in the description of earth (build 1.0D1.008), there is a "/n" showing I guess it should have been a new line
2: Don't know if this is possible, and yes I know it has been discussed "just a little" through the development phase. But I still think unused production from social production should be alocated to militarry and vice versa.

I started to read through the list to avoid duplicating others' suggestions but didn't realize there were so many until I got to the bottom of the first page. Hope this post isn't too boring ...

Only two minor points I'd like to have changed -

When I click on an 'auto-piloting' ship it doesn't remove the autopilot label like in GC1. So when I then right-click on the map to change destination I have to go and see that a new target point has been set. A click should either remove the autopilot label or we should be able to see autopilot routes.

The second point is that launching a transport doesn't seem to increase local approval (because of lower population) like in GC1. This was a great way of maintaining morale while also preparing for invasions, but now I have to build more entertainments ...

Otherwise I really liked the Akilians saying they knew I was building up to invade them, and that if their generals had been 'Intelligent' that they'd've done something about it. As it happens it was the Drengins I took out, but I'd found out who'd be next ...

Great game so far!!
