How to defend planet witch StarBase?

Hi all.

Yestoday i buy this amazing game. Then i start to build my space imperia. I choice patch of armed and armored peace.
So no fleet, but each planet or system got 1-2 Military Starbases. I up my starbases, so that he got varios upgrade modules for attack and defend themself. But if any enemy or npc ship fly to my planet and attack it, my nice defend starbases do nithing to stop the enemy. So i lost half of my colonies. Then i build this crap defender ships on each planet.

Ok my starbases don working for me But i saw that starbases from npc working well. Not only military, mining or influence shot enemy ship too. Only my starbases dont work. I build military only. And attack and armor rating was above 40+.

How can i order my starbase to defend my planets or entry system?

Starbases will only up the attack might of ships in it's vacinity. With a few overlapping beefed up Military Bases, you can put some scouts in orbit and still be able to properly defend your planets

Starbases won't defend anything.

There are several kinds of starbases, cultural, military, mining.

In all of them you can install starbase defenses (in case they're attacked by a ship, they'll fire back).

If you build military starbases, then you can add assistance modules, that will greatly improve your ships attack and defenses. This way they are very usefull, since even defenders can then have all forms of attck and defense. And then, the more wins they have with that asssistance, the more hitpoints it will get due to experience, so the ships also gets tougher to destroy. But starbases won't do anything on their own, unless if theyy are attacked and correctly equiped for defense.

Navstavnik; yes although i am not any expert at GC2 as yet, I did experience exactly what you mentioned. And even at the last minute shuttling space marines to my last planet did in fact hold planet bombardments off for over a dozen attempts. Next game I will get my military research going faster and those invaders are going to meet nuclear powered chain saws to cut them to pieces!!! LOL ;;cheers;;

That has been my stratey now as well. or rather I develop everythin I need, defenses, etc, in order to have minimum defensive capabilities, then reserch modules for the starbase and use just a handfull of defenders (my own version) to defend my sector while reserching more time consumming techs. Military starbases are central to this. The flaw of this system is if an enemy manages to rush you (or you miscalculate your moves and let a n enemy ship through your lines, and it takes out your starbase, your superb and invincible fleet will turn back into pumpkins (I'm not sure that's the correct vegetable though, my english is a bit wanting in that field) as if it was the 12th stroke of midnight for cinderella

No, pumpkin is the right vegetable (a'la Cinderella), and is an accurate description of the situation if you lose your Mil SBs, and only have weak ships on defense.

I did find out the hard way that a 'strong' ship that can kill other ships easily, will have a much tougher time against a built up SB!

There's a line of techs that you can research that lets a starbase take care of itself, Nastavnik. In fact, it makes starbases just about untouchable until late game.

Yes I saw it, I just dont research it too far, I focus on giving it some firepower and attack assistance modules. Each critical starbase has its own fleet of ships that take care of the incomings. It's risky because you can be "outflanked" by a ship with more moves and be caught out of position afetr performing an attack. But adding the extra defense modules is just more constructor than I can bare. I must remenber trying to put more constructor modules on a cargo ship...
