How Not to Howl

Poem

How Not to Howl

The Actor performs Ginsberg’s “Howl” with gusto.
The audience listens demurely,
Some call out trepiditious “go’s!”
I picture an auditorium engorged with academics
And a smattering of dark hearted, cigarette lunged poets.
All are trying to channel that corner of soul
which wears Darth Vadar’s helmet,
and a black turtleneck.
To caress the inner darkness is divine.
The Actor screams, shrieks, writhes
The greedy hearers squirm and swell with pride
when shivers run down their spines.

Bring it down a notch, Caldeiro darling, to the human stratosphere.
Words unscreamed can still be weighty.
A holler is not a Howl.

I don't know what 'trepiditious' means (unless it's the same as 'trepidacious'?), but I like that a lot, particularly the last two lines.
'I saw the best poems of my generation cut down by histrionics ...'

Beautiful! I have always felt that understatement has its own power. Your poem (and the self restraint it advocates) is proof positive.

Well done, indeed! Thanks for sharing your insight. --Shalom , Moskowitz
