Do starbases extend ship range?

I noticee that in a few games in gc1, I would get painted into a corner and couldn't reach my enemies at times since my ship range was limited. I was wondering if in gal civ 2 if bases could be built at range to extend the range of my ships, or do I have to make colonies to do this?

As far as I know bases will extend ship range just like they did in GalCiv1. You wouldn't be able to build colonies like you could in GalCiv1 anyway, since the useless worlds in GC2 are completely uncolonizable, unlike the Class 1 worlds in GC1.

Yes, starbases extend range.

It's worth noting though that finding a planet to do the job cheaper may not be as easy as you think--outside of the home systems (which have hardcoded planet classes), there are no planets below class 4 or 5. Somewhere around 2/3 or more of the planets in the game, even on Abundant, will be class 0 (and thus totally unusable).

Sweet. What exactly is the range of influence for a starbase in gal civ 2? When you plant one, can you see their influence range, or is it confined to a single grid square like in gal civ 1, regardless of where it is in that grid?

Each ship has it's own range that it can travel away from a colony or starbase. This is completely seperate from the range of affect of a starbase, and is equal for both a colony and a starbase. Does that make sense?

this is why having a fuel dump tech that you could plant on a moon in an otherwise useless planetary system would be nice to extend ship range. You could have fuel dump level 1,2,3 as far as tech goes. You could also have stationary weapons platforms to protect them that are not starbases but cost less.

when you click on a starbase you will see an aura that designates the area of influence. This aura will grow in size as you add modules. It is somewhat but not totally affected by the borders of a sector. If you build the starbase on the edge of a sector it will definitely seep over to the adjoining sector.

BTW I like the idea of having some kind of tech that will allow you to use zero quality planets as a base of some kind. After all if you can terraform a PQ 6 planet up to a PQ 12 or more you could certainly make a marginal planet usable to some degree

There's an event with a precursor artifact (at least in the beta ) where planets PQ gets bumped up 5 points. All the Zeros goto 5. Extra research stations...

Aye, Starbases do increase range as well as Life Support techs.
