The History of Galactic Civilizations posted

Game development over 12 years..

Galactic Civilizations II is now only a week away from release.  But it will have been 12 years since it's original release back in 1994 for IBM's OS/2.  How things have changed in that time.  The gang has put together a feature that talks about the history of the game from its humble OS/2 beginnings as well as Stardock's OS/2 game development days.

Its 72 degrees in Plymouth...? I really need to start going there more often (sadly, when the Coffee Bean started having hours it just wasn't time efficient for me to go).

And to think that I still have the floppy discs of that first version lying around here somewhere......

Might I be able to install OS/2 on some kind of virtual machine and go back to playing The Original GalCiv?

Nice!

I clicked on the link for Society for the first time. I hadn't check it out until now....and I rather wish I hadn't at all! MMO games generally don't appeal to me, but I think I might have finally found an exception to the rule. It's sort of like Mankind, except that it all takes place on a single world instead of in a galaxy of millions of star systems. Sort of like a persistent online RTS version of Civ, except more....personal, for lack of a better word. And now I have to wait almost a whole friggin year until *that* game comes out! Arrgh! Why must you torture me, Stardock??! Curse you!!!

By the way, I completely loved the turn-of-the-century ad for "Torian's Gal Civ". If it were made into a poster, I would seriously buy one and put it up on my wall.

.....Dear god, I've become such a fanboy. I think I may need professional treatment!

Ben: Next time the ice festival comes into Plymouth you'll have to come by...I've done ice carving the last 2 years, and I'm hoping to do a "Stardock" sponsored one next year (with a towering icy Yor or something).

Martok: That "spoof-ad" was actually made by a GalCiv forum-goer a few years back. IIRC, he also did a series of GalCiv inspired comics (can't remember the users name unfortunatly). I'll try to dig it up!

Considering that I live just a few miles down the road; I am pretty sure that he means in the airconditioned/heated facility where they work. I can assure you that it is much colder than that outside. (Although it has been a pleasantly warm winter this year )

That would be awesome, BoogieBac. I'm kind of disturbed I didn't notice any of that stuff before, though, as I've been lurking around the forums since at least 2003. Ah well, better late than never!

First GalCiv universe background, now SD history... we're getting spoiled here.

Btw, maybe you can alter Michigan's climate with the money you're going to make Brad.
Or use virtual reality.

Now that we're talking about the weather, you guys should read this hilarious PvP episode about the snowfall in Boston.
