Installed skin doesnt show up

no show in list in config window

I am running Winxp with windowblinds v4.5. When I download some skins I cant get them to show up in the Windowblinds Configuration window. I have found this problem with other skins so it may be a bug in Windowblinds itself. I have curred the problem with some skins by removing and installing them a few times but some skins just wont show up no matter what, like Terminator_3_Visual_Style. It is in my windowblinds folder but I cant get it to show in the list in the configuration window. Does anyone know how to fix this?

You can either hit the rebuild list button, or add it manually to your list...If you need further help let me know.

Make sure your downloading skins that will work with your version of WB's some skins are made for WB5. Therefore some will not work with WB 4

Is it possible that when you downloaded the skin you only saved the download to the directory folder but didn't install it into your Windowblinds Application?

The only skin with that name I can find via Google is not a WB skin. No such WB skin is listed at WinCustomize.

Is there a file in the skin folder with the extension .uis? If not, it's not a WB skin.

Patriots: If I rebuild the list sometimes some of the skins in the list disappear. I am not sure what you mean by manually installing the skin. Other than in the configuration window selecting "Add Skin". Is that what you mean by manual install? Mrs footsie: I have also just clicked on Terminator_3_Visual_Style.wba and installed it but that doesn’t work. I actually download it to another folder to save it, then I install it to the normal WindowBlind folder at C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\WindowBlinds. Daiwa: This skin is listed under "WindowBlinds" when you click the link in the left column of the home page. Or if you search it comes up here- https://www.wincustomize.com/Skins.aspx?LibID=1&view=1&sortby=4&sortdir=DESC&p=1&advanced=0&searchtxt=Terminator
I totally appreciate the help as I read where others have the same problem also.

I found that skin when I searched WC also, but naming is literal with WB so I dismissed it as not the same as "Terminator_3_Visual_Style".

I D/L'd the skin & took a look - naming is indeed the problem I believe.

The .uis file is named "Terminator3.uis" & all the image designations in the .uis file use the path "Terminator3\".

The .uis file has this entry in the [TitlebarSkin] section: "SkinName=Official Terminator 3 Windows Style".

WB uses the "SkinName=" entry to name the skin folder, which in this case would cause the path to the images to be nonexistent. If you still have the .wba download file, open it with WinZip, then open the Terminator3.uis file with Notepad from within the WinZip dialog. Change the "SkinName=" entry to "SkinName=Terminator3". Save the .uis file, close WinZip. Delete the old folder named "Official Terminator 3 Windows Style" and then reinstall the skin by double-clicking the .wba file or using the Install From Disk function in WB Config.

That "should" fix it. Please post back if that fails.

just downloaded and applied the T3.
It shows in my list, but I'm running WB5

Non 5 WB should be at 4.60 per SDC
if your subscription is still active for WB, you might try updating.

however, with WB I have noticed everyonce in a while if I rebuild the list, some parts of the picture disappeared. Haven't noticed it today, just updated so may it won't glitch.

I saw Sir Bichur had posted while I was typing - maybe WB5 uses less rigid naming requirements or pulls the name from one of the image path entries, or maybe adds the folder name to the beginning of the path for all the images. WB does need to know what to name the folder, so something has to be the designated source of the folder name. In general, it is least likely to cause problems if the name of the .uis and .wba files and the SkinName= entry are all identical and match the image path.

That was it! Your awesome Daiwa! This should become a sticky for this forum! It shows how files are named. Now I know how to fix the other files that dont show up too! Thanks again Daiwa!

Glad that got you squared away.

To be fair to SD, this is not a "bug" or fault in WB - it is simply a mistake skinners can easily make. You tend to get snowblind after awhile when skinning and overlooking something like that is way too easy - I've done it myself.

SkinStudio takes a lot of the "worry out of being close" by policing those little details for you, but many skinners, particularly experienced ones who've been around since long before SKS's predecessor BuilderBlinds, often work with just the text file. TheSkinsFactory is a terrific skinner who does beautiful work - I'm sure this was just an oversight.
